Darwen set to bloom with launch of flower power competition

COUNCILLORS in the Whitehall ward of Darwen will launch a Whitehall in Bloom competition in a bid to brighten up the area.

People living in the area, as well as schools and businesses, are being urged to bring some colour to the ward with attractive floral displays.

Whitehall councillor Karimeh Foster said: “We are trying to encourage people to take some pride in their area.

“In the year of the Queen’s Jubilee, we want to make the place colourful, and clean and tidy.

“We wanted to come up with a way to motivate people in the area, so decided to introduce Whitehall in Bloom.”

There will be a number of classes, including large gardens, small gardens, balconies, garages, schools, and businesses, as well as the best overall display.

Local firms WEC and Claire’s Creatures, in Cemetery Road, have agreed to take part, and Four Seasons Garden Centre is offering 10per cent off flowers to be used as part of the campaign.

Coun Foster said if the scheme is successful, the intention is to expand it to cover the whole of Darwen.
