Blackburn with Darwen mayor slams the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee china cup plan

THE Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen has hit out at town council plans to give china cups to children as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Coun Karimeh Foster said the money should be put to better use in the community.

She said: “I put this question to the people of Darwen: is this where you want your money to be spent?

“There are other projects in Darwen this money would be better spent on.

"Things like the library, or the Darwen Valley Community Centre are where the money for the jubilee should go.

“I think maybe the people in charge of spending money don’t know how to spend it.”

The town council announ-ed yesterday that £13,000 would be spent on giving 4,000 mugs out to primary school children as part of the diamond jubilee.

They will be handed out at the town centre celebration on Saturday, June 2.

I think it is outrageous to question the decission of the town council to give souvenirs to the children. We know a lot of the council decissions aren't exactly work of genius, but this is one of the good ones!

To the question.. Yes, this is exactly how I would like my money to be spent! It is a very good idea that the kids will get a souvenir from this celebration...

The funds for the community shouldn't be for the expence of such a lovely occasion of celebration! I know people that still have their mugs from the silver jubilee in 1977!

Also, if the library needed more money to be spent on it, the council shouldn't have made the cuts in first place!

The Mayor who is quick to publish her ethnicity and represents a LITTLE town like Darwen should realise that MANY people prefer the Jubilee to the Olympics.

whilst I think this is a good idea, I can understand where Karimah is coming from, the Library and the Community Centre are both in desperate need of funds to cater for all the people of Darwen, £13,000.00 seems a lot of money for 4,000 cups but it only works out at £3.25 each maybe the council could purchase more cups to sell to those that wish to buy extra as it is only the primary school children who are getting them I know of families who have children at primary school and also either at nursery or with childminders who wont get a cup but would like one, if these were sold to them at more then £3.50 then Darwen Town Council would recover some of the costs.

Good idea!

Lets hope someone from the council reads your comment because they sure haven't got the brains to work that one out for themselves!

I'll buy 2 at least!

Hey Coun Foster ! Publish your own costs to the taxpayer. You voted that BwD councillors should not receive ANY allowances. Tell us all exactly how much you & your husband have claimed after you voted to receive nothing. The word 'hypocracy' springs to mind.

Maybe If It was the King of Jordan on the cups, this would not Irritate her so much!! These kids are British and should be encouraged to be patriotic and proud of OUR Queen and OUR Royal Family. This Country needs to be more like America and Canada and fly the Union Jack flag In their garden just like the Stars and Stripes and Maple leaf do in the respective Countries. As already mentioned, give up your expenses and Limo, Instead of making British kids recieve a part of British history.

Karimeh dear, the darwen town council budget is raised by the people of darwen, and the Town Council is the conduit by which the revenue should be spent......
It is not intended to plug the holes in our services created by the budget cuts of BwDBC.

You and your husband should perhaps reflect on the cost to the taxpayer (£1m+) of your futile appeal against the building of DACA.
