Jubilee cups for every primary school pupil in Darwen

CELEBRATION Coun Joan Helliwell with one of the jubilee commemorative cups to be handed out to children in Darwen CELEBRATION Coun Joan Helliwell with one of the jubilee commemorative cups to be handed out to children in Darwen

DARWEN Town Council will spend £13,000 to give every primary school pupil in the town a china cup for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The council was split at its meeting on Tuesday over whether the giveaway should take place.

But a narrow vote carried the motion and 4,000 cups will be handed out over the the jubilee weekend.

A similar initiative took place for the Silver Jubilee in 1977, and Coun Trevor Maxfield said it would be a nice gesture.

He said: “I was given one in 1977 and I’ve still got mine. It went in a cabinet and has been there ever since.

"It is a nice gesture and, with all the flags that will be put up in the town for the jubilee weekend, it will raise the profile of the town and bring people in.”

Coun Joan Helliwell also thought it was a good idea.

She said: “Darwen is a traditional town and we are trying to hold on to those traditions, as well as create new ones of our own.”

Coun Roy Davies said he also received a mug during the Queen’s visit to the town after her coronation in 1953.

But town council mayor Paul Browne said the cups were a waste of money. He said: “I am not against the idea, but I think £13,000 is a lot that could be better spent elsewhere.

“I know it is the jubilee and everyone is making big efforts, but I think it is a waste of money.”

The Queen’s Diamond Ju-bilee celebrations will centre on an extended weekend on June 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Aye, you're right there, Paul. There's £100,000 that could be better spent on other things if we didn't have Darwen Town Council.
Free mugs? We're all mugs in Darwen.

I think it's a nice gesture and well worth the money. It's things like this that make people feel that they belong to the town.

If I lived in Darwen I would be absolutely raging about this.

What right has anyone got to spend taxpayer's money on promoting a monarch which many people can't stand anyway?

if they insist on spending the money let the kids plant, or sponsor the planting of a tree. That may at least be of some use or value.

WEC saved Darwen Council £40,000+ with the dome on the tower.

We're still £27,000 in the black with that!

What an absolute waste of money.Utterly digraceful in the current economical mess that we are all supposed to be in together. And with whats going on with the NHS are you positive the receivers of the said cups can actually read whats on them..? Unlike in 1953 and 1977 a completely different world to what we live in today. Infact in 1953 and 1977 it was a time that you could afford to die in unlike the world we survive in today.£13.000 could have run a soup kitchen for the rising numbers of homeless people for a number of years.Coun Trevor Maxfield Coun Joan Helliwell Coun Roy Davies need to realise that some kids not much older than the ones they are giving these cups to are living on the streets. The good people of Darwen should be up in arms protesting this mindless decision.

Oh yeah, local mugs for local mugs.

I was talking to a councillor some time ago about the need for some bins at Shorey Bank.
Apparently there isn't the money for that.

They are more likely to be China from China. However, at least the child recipients will be able to use them as begging bowls when it is time for them to earn their keep.

Our Darren kids are going to enjoy every minute of this, Let them enjoy the little things in life, Things are for giving NOT RECEIVING. We on the other hand being adults know quite well that our beloved council will be drawing the money back for it in our ever increasing council tax.
Let the little ones enjoy it while they still can. God bless........

kimboy1 - no doubt, like myself, u voted 'no' in the referendum to establish Darwen Town Council ? Those who voted 'yes' were clearly told that it would add an average of £11 to the council tax. Don't blame the council, blame those who voted 'yes'.

and i know of one particular councillor who says that DTC is a total waste of money - but does nothing to rid the town of this waste of money and happy to keep his place on the council and charging the people of darwen their addtional precept year after year ad infinitum - another bloated plutocrat full of his/her own bloated ego....any guesses english rose?

I thought that we were paying extra community tax for the benefit of all the people of darwen not just what the 'council' fancied.Giving out the mugs on saturday will mean a lot of darwen kids will be disapointed as blackburn accrington or any other early out of town shoppers with kids will collect them.if they must be provided ,why not take them to the schools,or is this too much trouble.they were given out that way last time.alternatelyprov
ide much needed litter bins, and some floral arrangements for our bare town centre

i think this is a good idea, people say the money could be spent better, but don`t say where.

so you have £13,000 to spend, it is to benefit the whole community, and have NO ongoing costs, so give us your ideas.

Err... give the children a few pound coins each - don't they (the coins, not the children) have the monarch's head?

Or shall we have signs at the town boundaries pleading for the monarch's help in the matter of separating Darwen and Blackburn? The signs should be made of plastic rather than metal.

For those who consider that the monarch has reigned long enough, £13000 multiplied by the number of boroughs in the country gives enough for effective anti-monarchist responses of all sorts...

so that is £8000 (as 4000 cups are being made) spent on nothing to mark the occasion.
