Darwen Academy pupils to make difference to community

STUDENTS from Darwen Academy are set to make a difference to people in the local community.

Almost 500 students are set to help over the course of the two day ‘Stand Out in Darwen’ event.

The initiative is being led by Lauren Davies, co-ordinator and programme designer for students’ physical, social and emotional wellbeing, at the school.

Among the projects lined up so far are: * Creating art works and cleaning up at Witton Park, Blackburn and Sunnyhurst Woods, Darwen.

* Cleaning up, making and filling planters in Redvers Road, Darwen.

* Helping out the elderly during an IT coffee morning at the Academy.

* Handing out flyers designed by students requesting items for Age UK shop.

Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Coun Karimeh Foster, who is a Darwen councillor, said it was a good project.

She said: “It will teach the kids to communicate with other people and work with people of different ages.

“It will help them to listen to and learn from other people in the community.

“Children can learn a great deal by going out of the classroom.

“I am glad the kids have been given this opportunity to get an experience of life.”

Darwen Town Council deputy chairman Coun Steve Duncan said: “If it gets them out into the communities it is bound to help.

“But the great challenge is getting the kids to help outside of school hours.

“As long as the project doesn’t detract from their learning it is a good thing.”

The event will take place on March 29 and 30.

How about a litter picking up exercise to make them realise that what is left unwanted on the floor without thought may very well belong to them!

Then to be artistic you could put it in a glass tank of formaldehyde to make a poignant point if you like?

Typical "blame the kids comment" i see hundreds of Academy students using Sainsbury's most mornings and not once have i seen any of them drop any litter!
When i'm doing my shopping they always display a polite and considerate approach to the public. I think the adults in the area need to set the appropriate example before placing blame on
young people.

I would expect a lot more respect and a lot better vocabulary from our Mayor.

Why oh why does she have to brand the students or children as "kids".

It really get my goat.

I wonder how she addressed her beloved King.

Completely agree southern-rover. I have been to DACA on an open day and seen the work that this school is achieving with their students. They are a credit and a breath of fresh air. Any effort to help out is a step in the right direction and I also agree that the students are helpful and polite through their own choice not because they have to.district01 your glass is half empty of course, I imagine you go round looking for articles that you can add your bitter comments to. It achieves nothing, unlike these young adults whom you would do well to learn from.

Got to agree with you, save for a few, most youths in the area are great at the moment.... perhaps through co-incidence that DACA opened a couple of years ago, perhaps not.
The upheaval that the DVHS children have put up with over the last 12 or 18 months doesn't seem to have too adverse an effect on them either.
We will always have problems from a few unruly types, but that goes for all generations.

And she tried her best to stop the Academy / 6th Form / Community & Sporting Facilities being built on the site ! Wasting nearly £1m of our money in legal fees etc; in the process ! Yet she has no problem having her picture taken in the Academy and with the students !
