Darwen takeaway ordered to remove 'garish' sign

A TAKEAWAY landed itself in hot water before it even opened, after erecting an illegal sign.

Miami Chicken & Pizza is due to open in the near future at the bottom of Bolton Road, near to Darwen Circus.

The takeaway had put up its sign on the shop front, but Blackburn with Darwen Council has instructed the owners to remove it.

The business is in the middle of the area currently being renovated as part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), and the council deemed the sign not to be in keeping with the work.

Whitehall Councillor David Foster received complaints about the sign.

He said: “There have been a number of properties being done up at the bottom of Bolton Road.

“This rather garish sign didn’t fit in with the heritage aspects of the work.

“The sign is being taken down.”

Joe Zari, of Miami Chicken & Pizza, said: “It is not a problem. It will be sorted.”

Brian Bailey, director of regeneration for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “The sign was installed without planning permission and its design and location within the Darwen town centre conservation area is considered inappropriate. As such we are taking steps to have it removed.”

Darwen Town Councillor Brenda Cronshaw said: “It was appalling and it did not fit in with the rest of the area.

“They’ve spent so much money round there, I am glad it is going.”

THI was set up as a £2million ‘repairs fund’ for Darwen in 2009, with half the cash from the Heritage Lottery fund, matched by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

A survery had revealed that old buildings were losing their original character and appearance through the removal of architectural detail and alterations.

Grants of up to 60 per cent are available for structural repairs and up to 90 per cent of the cost of the restoration of architectural detail.

Premises that have already benefitted include the Grade II listed tram shelters in Belgrave Square, shop fronts in Bolton Road and Holker House.

This is great news! I hope this becomes a trend in town, next on the list needs to be the new bookies that has just opened on Railway Rd, the signage is worst than vandalism, in fact ALL the block (bar Slice) should have their signage audited in this way.

Then demolish the eyesore that is Chippys, and build some steps and gardens to lead up to St Peters.

I am intrigued what the new purpose of The Lodges building is gonna be, please, please, please NO more Fried Chicken shops, hairdressers, pound shops or bookies!!!! There are already far too many.

Is this the building on the main road? It has taken over a year to be refurbished and then surprise surprise another take away appears.I wonder what was the point in English heritage funding that? No idea how all these food establishments stay in business but I do know that they and the rents (plus other factors) are killing the town centre. More shops open at night than day.

"Whitehall Councillor David Foster received complaints about the sign." Why allow one there in the first place if it is part of a heritage site? Subtle is not a word normally associated with TAKAWAY signs!

There's an easy way to reduce the number of takeaways in Darwen. Darwen people should buy fewer takeaways. These are businesses, not charities. If no-one buys their goods, then they will close down.

Darwen is not a hole, it has loads of potential to be a great town. It was fantastic to see Carlos Deli open in one of th market front shops, as part of the heritage project, I can't believe it took the council so long to get this done. Darwen's Italian community needs more of a presence in town, it would sure bring visitors in. A proper barista Italian coffee house/restaurant meeting place should be given the same priority as 'Asian' projects are give in neighbouring Blackburn. The restaurant premesis between the main road and bridge street should be bought by the council and 'given' to the Italian community it would be a great way to promote Darwen and create a thriving community business. NO MORE TAKE AWAYS! NO MORE POUND SHOPS!

Another sign crime, is the nondescript business that has just opened in the 'grand' Nat West building (it used to be above Chippys). This is one of Darwen's flagship buildings, the architecture is fantastic, it was sad to see this business take up residence after a long period of the building being empty. It was even more depressing when the signage went up.

This should alos be on the list. Darwen Council, get a list drafted up and action it!

I don't see anything wrong with bookies signs at least they don't light up red white and green. There is only one pound shop and as far as I know only two bookies, although I agree there are far too many hairdressers.

Not all the bookies, just specifically the one on Railway road that has just opened (within the perimeter of the heritage project). The row of Georgian buildings used to house solicitors, etc and looked OK. The signage on display now is mediocre to say the least. These buildings deserve better and it is good to see the council waking up to this problem. Crunchy Plus, Little Angels and the other building on the block would also benefit from their help.

There are strict rules about signage that is allowed within the conservation area - a little too tight in my opinion, but thats another matter - and this sign is just way to far out of keeping with the building. Any premises undergoing work partly funded by the Townscape Hertiage fund have to have handpainted signage- regardless of what they had previously. I'm sure the takeawy will look loads better once they have the sign removed and replaced with a handpainted one.

Well for a start, you left.
That's a good thing.

But realistically, good things about Darwen, it's surrounded by greenery and moorland, has 3 nice parks, plenty of architecture and character.
There are still a number of thriving large and small businesses.

Sadly the town is largely inhabited by people who can neither work, cook or pick up litter and dog mess.

Despite being racist, most Darweners don't mind buying all their meals/fags/lottery tickets from foreigners and don't care too much when they sell alcohol to their kids.
While they sit on their backside complaining about the town being over run by this that and the other.

It could be argued that takeaways are good for Darwen as they are businesses generating jobs and revenue.
Though currently small businesses are getting free rates. Many takeaways collect much of their takings in cash, i'll leave the reader to decide whether they reckon it will all get declared for tax purposes. A number of restaurants/takeaway
s in Darwen have been raided by Immigration for employing illegals.

So if collecting Darweners' benefit money and exchanging it for some prepacked cash and carry toppings on a slab of dough or some offal wrapped in a naan, then paying it directly to an illegal immigrant, is what Darwen's economy needs we are on to a winner.

The most unsightly thing in Darwen is the "BERLIN WALL" at the bottom of Hardman Way. If this is in the so called "Heritage Project" it should be demolished immediately. Whoever the "Town Planners"(???) were in those days needed to have their heads/eyes examined. They certainly could not read a drawing for sure. It is an eyesore and becoming worse every day. There is not a lot wrong with Darwen. Three excellent supermarkets, Asda, Sainsbury's and the Co-op, oh, and don't forget Lidl. Also an excellent Leisure Centre, a award winning Academy and a well patronised Indoor and Three Day Market. AND three beautiful parks. Maybe the population could do with a "smartening up" but that is up to them. So to taxi driver and the rest of you knockers, if you don't like Darwen KEEP OUT - simple!!

It's true that many of the Darweb italian population are originally of Albanian descent, but I think you'll find that there have been "ethnic" Albanians in Italy for a few hundred years, and that many of the current Italian population of Darwen either came over after WWII, or are descended from former Italian prisoners-of-war

You narrow minded, small sighted weirdos hold back progress, and your inability to see beyond your own warped views holds the area back. I don't know if it's because you feel inadequate, have a tiny **** or if it's just that you have a big void in your life, your own under achievements giving you the urge to troll and 'swagger' about the place you live, trying to make it seem better by putting down the places that surround it, with mediocre boring put-downs about inbreeding, casual racism and such.

You just don't seem to get it, you fickle numpties.

Craftsmen have done a fantastic job renovating the shop frontage of this building, it looks fantastic, the sign that has been put on it totally undermines the project, the money invested and the ambition to improve. To use an analogy, it's like creating a wedding cake and then placing a dog **** on top, or buying a tailored suit and then wearing trainer with it. There SHOULD and NEEDS to be a lot more control and regulations into how signage and other stuff is presented in town AND the saturation of specific kinds of businesses that there are in abundance. Amateur produced designs look ****. If more time, professionalism and consideration was put into them it would look LOADS better and hopefully have positive repercussions.

Weirdos.

Darwen is a gorgeous little town, once home of the biggest paper manufacturers in Europe. Samuel Crompton, inventor of the Spinning Mule, lived there for some time and George Orwell wrote of the people of Darwen. Even Ghandi visited Darwen! Finally, a film starring Norman Wisdom was made there.
The town boasts enviable parks interesting streets and roads, nooks and crannies where it is possible to see the industrial heritage of a typical cotton town. The biggest blight as far as Darwen's autonomy is concerned is the fact that it was hijacked by Blackburn.
The people of Darwen deserve a break. They have been treated as the poor neighbour and sidelined although it isn't desirable to make a museum out of the place by going too far, the Townscape Heritage Initiative could provide a renaissance and a breath of air.
So, please, Chris283, don't SHOUT, a device considered rude and ill mannered ever since we were able to communicate via the computer, and reflect upon the positives.

There's an easy way to reduce the number of takeaways in Darwen. Darwen people should buy fewer takeaways. These are businesses, not charities. If no-one buys their goods, then they will close down.
You'd think wouldn't you? But Great Harwood is very similar and one of the origional take aways never has anyone in the shop, but has continued trading quite well. The thing is, with so many take aways in these small towns, how can they all be making a profit? Hmmmm wonder what the specials are?

I just wonder if the owner of this take away was called Mohamed and was selling Asian fare, would the sign have been deemed OK
You'd be surprised then, if you learned that the operation was owned/run by Asians?

This thread is NOT about Blackburn. I do NOT EVER go to Blackburn out of necessity, there is just no need. For any convenience shopping I will go to Darwen; Sainsburys, the Market and local shops. For any other purchases I will shop online, go to Bolton, Manchester or Preston. NEVER Blackburn. I have NO interest in Blackburn whatsoever.

Whenever anyone from out of the area asks me where Darwen is I say 'next to Bolton', this is factually correct. I don't see why Darwen needs to be associated to Blackburn, I see this association as negative.

I love Darwen it is great, it could be better, but for a small town (with no delusions that it could be a city) it is ****ing WELL GOOD. Anyone that thinks otherwise has 'Tower Envy'.

Well I have to agree with darwen_celeb .

We NEVER shop in Blackburn .

1- one way system is atrocious .

2- parking is virtually impossible .

3- leaving your car while shopping is dangerous to its health .

Now , Darwen is fantastic - but I would like to ask a few questions . To everyone .

A - the sign is still up . Explain please ?

B - next door is a taxi service , who park their cars as they feel like . On a main road . Is there a connection between these two businesses ?

C - I notice the tobacco/sweetie/thin
gy shop on the corner has shut and is being shop-fitted . As what may I ask , and is there a connection ?

D - likewise part of the old carpet shop on Bridge Street - what's that going to be ?
(incidentally why did they move from a central location to the "outskirts" ?)

E - are we paying for these through our council taxes ?

-------------------

Now - a piece of advice....
NEVER go to Sainsbury's round about three o'clock on a school day ! Why not ? - because a yellow double decker parks half-way down Sudell road at the raised bus stop , causing an horrendous chicane , AND , Sainsbury's car park is full ; of mummies picking up their kids from The Academy .

Good answer Mr. Hussain .

I am so pleased that you have given a logical and reasoned repy to all my questions .

Some of us care about Darwen .

Others don't - they just take all the benefits they can get while working as taxi drivers and serving up slops .

Your category is .....?

Well I'm proud of Darwen AND Blackburn and try to do all my shopping in Blackburn in order to improve my borough. If you lot want to patronise Bolton (which is worse than Blackburn) and Manchester then that's your prerogative but stop slagging Blackburn off.

I care about Darwen too and try and spend as much of My hard earned money in Darwen too but I have better things to think about than worry about trivial things unlike You.
If you are not happy with any service in Darwen ie taxi's and takeaways then dont use them , its quite simple really.
I dont need You to tell Me where and when to shop and about the parking problems , I'm sure we can work them out ourselves.
Lets stick to the subject which is being discussed : did you all realise the sign can be put on the inside of the shop and thus would be deemed ok ?

There's a shock .

By the way - what exactly are my "trivial things" ?
