Jake Beret! Darwen and Rossendale MP joins the Navy

EAST Lancashire might be a long way from the sea, but it hasn’t stopped a local MP ‘joining’ the Royal Navy.

MP for Darwen and Rossendale Jake Berry has signed up for the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme as a Royal Naval Reservist.

The scheme is a privately-run programme to give MPs experience of the Armed Forces, with the aim of improving the quality of debate on military issues by exposing its members to first-hand experience.

Mr Berry was enlisted at the Royal Navy’s Whale Island base in Portsmouth.

He said: “It is hugely important that MPs understand the commitment and hard work of our Armed Forces.

“They make a fantastic contribution. It will be a privilege to serve with them.”

He said he was looking forward to an ‘exciting year’, with trips to trouble spots including Afghanistan’s Camp Bastian and the Falkland Islands coming up.

“Unfortunately I won’t be going off to chase Somali pirates anytime soon,” he joked.

Mr Berry was also given a tour of HMS Dragon, a Type-45 destroyer.

He said: “I’ve had a fantastic day at a fantastic facility.”

As an under-graduate member of the scheme, Mr Berry must spend at least 22 days in his new role this year.

Good for you 'MATE' if only other MPs do the same they will learn what its like in today's British Armed Forces.

I am not an MP but I did my bit for 22 years in the Welsh Guards. Maybe these yobbos could take a leaf out of my book and do the same?

Fair play for the effort, but surely he would have been wiser signing up to the TA as they have barracks local to his constituency.

Or even a regiment with a base near Parliament.

He better set sail quickly because at the rate the coalition is slashing the Royal Navy, there won't be any ships left before too long....perhaps Jake is planning to defend the Falklands in a bath tub, armed with a popgun!!!
Rather than dressing up for photo opportunities our MP should make better use of his time asking why we will be without an Aircraft Carrier for the next 10 years

DalVAucarD, you need to sort your English out if you don't like being misunderstood.

Given that he won't have the time to train up, or shouldn't have, and that he can't really be called up whilst he's an MP, plus his constituency is well and truly land locked, can this really be seen as anything but a pretty cheap publicity stunt?
