TWO teenage Good Samaritans were rewarded after coming to the aid of a pensioner who fell and broke her hip.

Eighty-five-year-old Betty Finney fell in Powell Street, Darwen, where she lives, last week.

But Jordan Woodburn, 13, and Harry Wheatley, 14, saw her lying in the street and called her an ambulance, then sat with her while they waited for it to arrive.

Mrs Finney wanted to find out who the boys were so she could reward them after they both left when the ambulance arrived.

Victoria Woodburn, who lives in Melbourne Street, Clayton-le-Moors, said her son was telling her about what happened the day before it appeared in the Lancashire Telegraph.

She said: “Jordan lives with his dad now but when he came round he was telling me all about it.

“It was just a coincidence that I saw it in the paper the next day.

“It was really lovely for him to do that.”

Jordan, who lives with his dad in Woodland Court, and Harry, from Olive Lane, were given £50 each after a collection by Mrs Finney’s family.

Mrs Finney’s son, Paul, said: “I spoke to Jordan and asked him about it and he said a car pulled up and gave my mum a tissue, which nobody else would know, so I’m satisfied it was definitely them.

“I am very pleased. We were worried we wouldn’t be able to contact anyone with it being Christmas.

“You don’t know how long she could have been lying there, so all the family is really pleased.”

Mr Finney, of Brandyhouse Brow, Blackburn, said his mother was doing really well.

He said: “She is all right now. She has had a full hip replacement and has fully stood up once.

“She is getting ready for walking about already - they don’t mess about do they?

“She’s tough is my mum. My wife said to her, ‘does it not hurt?’ and she replied ‘oh yes’, but she doesn’t lie there moaning.”
