Darwen rehab centre decision on hold

DOZENS of protesters came to learn whether controversial plans for a rehab centre in their area would get the go-ahead.

But councillors decided to postpone their decision at the last minute.

Oswaldtwistle-based The Station Project wants to convert the former Woodlands care home, Holly Tree Close, Darwen, into a rehabilitation centre for mothers with drug and alcohol problems.

Her planning application was recommended for approval by officers from Blackburn with Darwen council ahead of the meeting.

Protesters packed into Blackburn Town Hall as Catherine Floyd, of The Station Project, made her case, telling councillors no drugs or alcohol would be allowed on the site, there would be less traffic than previous uses of the listed building and insisting the women who would use the centre ‘have a right to get well’.

But rather than vote on the application, Labour councillors put forward a motion to defer the decision while residents’ concerns about changes made to the application were investigated.

Liberal Democrat and Conservative members abstained, meaning the vote was carried and the application will instead come before September’s planning meeting.

Can anyone tell me would Darwen residence be the people actually staying in this centre or would they be from out of town?.

From the previous application in Sudell Road it was clear that Darwen would have received all the hassle and none of the benefits of such a centre. Once one institution finds a loop hole then they all jump on the band wagon.

Why don't they apply to Stay in the the old Lodging House near the new Health Centre.

Im all for rehabilitation but not in the inappropriate locations that both the Sudell Road and Woodlands sites have been applied for.

The woodlands building is such a wonderful listed building. What a great shame this building will be used for such a use is if it goes ahead.

Darwen is not a soft touch and we don't want this centre here in these locations. Once you get one others will follow, find somewhere else !!

If Station Projects is based in Oswaldtwistle then open a centre there, you are not even based in Darwen.

Why not convert your own house into a centre?.

here come the 'NIMBY' crew.
-
the residents of such facilities are not usually there against thier will, they have volunteered because they want to get well! they are probably much less of a 'threat' to the area than anyone else.
-
places at these facilities are in short supply and the lucky few who get this type of help have probably had to demonstrate a very positive attitude towards getting better to even gain a place, speaking personally i would be more concerned about the ones who are not interested in getting well and will continue to thieve and sell themselves to fund thier habits.

Give these women a break!

Pound for every t1t who uses the word nimby!!!

Open your house or live next door to one of the places...

What do you think the current (NEW) hostel is for?

This isn't for Darwen residents so maybe it should be built in great Harwood?

The location isn't a concern for organisation so go elsewhere.... they are trying to find soft council and councillors...

I have been going out trying to get people sign FOR the centre to be set up! as i know Catherine i KNOW what a good job and I WOULD LOVE to have one set up in my area! I live near bolventure part on one of the terist streets and there are around 3 drug takers just on my street. honestly I am relieved that someone is setting something up! surly that two otheres have tryed to bin set up resontly just proves there is a need for one in Darwen!!!

If people aren't willing to help how are they expected to get better, shoving the problem under the carpet doesn't make anything better. I am going to asking people to sign a petition on the matter from about 1:30 until 3.

one final thing is that people were obsessed to the homeless shelter along the main road but that hasn't been any problems has it! some people need to grow some compassion for how troubled some of these people must be to have resorted to drugs or drink
