Darwen man jailed for two years for knife attack

A DARWEN man who ‘stabbed and sliced’ a man over a debt has been jailed for more than two years.

Joseph Doherty had called round to the sheltered accommodation to collect the money owed when a row broke out.

Police were already at the Birch Hall apartments, having been called by a staff member, before the knife attack on Andrew Knagg took place.

Doherty, who had been drinking and sniffing ligh-ter fuel, was found standing over Mr Knagg and with a knife in his hand.

Doherty, 25, formerly of Ivinson Road, Darwen, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and two common assaults on police who went to arrest him.

He was jailed for two years and 12 weeks by a judge at Preston Crown Court.

A five-year restraining order was also imposed, barring him from contacting Mr Knagg or going within 200 metres of his address.

Doherty was an acquain-tance of Mr Knagg, whom the prosecution described as ‘vulnerable’.

Sylvia Dacre, prosecuting, said that on April 6, Doherty went to the apartments, seeking the return of a loan of money he had given to Mr Knagg.

The supervisor called the police. An argument broke out after they had arrived.

The defendant allegedly told him, “Give me some money or I'll knife you.” Mr Knagg then spoke of being sliced on the neck with a fisherman’s-type knife.

He said he was sliced again to the side of the left cheek by Doherty who told him, “Give me £20 or I'll stab you proper next time.”

The defendant punched two officers who went to arrest him and had to be restrained with the use of pava spray.

Mr Knagg was treated in hospital.

Doherty had previous convictions for violence and in 2008 was given 18 months jail for an assault.

Gareth Jones, defending, said it was fortunate that the injuries were not more serious.

In passing sentence, Judge Anthony Russell QC told Doherty: “You sliced at his neck and there was also a stab wound.

“You compounded your crime by becoming violent with the police who went to arrest you.”

Another case of someone who needs locking up for longer than 18 months/ 2 years! He's done one jail term, not learned his lesson and repeated his crime. Will he learn anything in the next 2 years? I hope so, but I have my doubts. Not unless he gets some serious psychiatric help while inside prison.

Gotta say this, in case it's never crossed anyone elses mind but just what is it about people from Darwen and knives? Whoops, it's because most are on drugs or sniffing lighter fuel! Or is it because they are born 'simple?'. Even their children appear to be indoctrinated in these ways soon as being born. If you want to see true stagnation in the gene pool or human race visit this town! It will not fail to make your eyes open in wonder, awe and despair. Just watch you don't go too near one of the citizens though for they may mug you or say some bizarre gibberish only such people understand such as 'innit' or '**** off you proper spoken English toss pot' whilst chewing on some drug substance, foaming at the mouth. Don't believe me? Go and look for yourself! But around the rougher areas not the 'posher' (not that it is it's just tidier but means nowt as they say, not in Darwen) ones towards the moors. I promise you you will never wish to visit it again. That's not being harsh BTW but being quite realistic because the place is a doss house for crime, and the dregs of humanity. They should run coach trips to the 'horror chambers of the north west, see how creatures from the past once roamed the Earth before evolving'. It should be a real money spinner!

.

As to learning something in prison. Scum will always be scum because they are born that way. Just another knife wielding psychiatric basket case waiting to happen, then upon release. Astoshingly, these scum don't think there's anything wrong with their behaviour. Therein lies the problem itself. Inability to rationalise nor take responsibility for their behaviour because their brains simply don't possess those cells. Mind you, those were possibly burnt out by sniffing lighter fuel. What a pity he didn't self immolate, doing the rest of society a very big favour, then.

I doubt this idiot lives in Torquay. He sounds like a wind-up merchant from Blackburn or Burnley. In any case, he sounds like a pompous, bitter and twisted individual. He needs to take a good look in the mirror before making such cheap comments.
