Plan to introduce 'guardians' for Darwen parks

DARWEN town councillors are considering whether to employ a worker to take care of four of the area’s parks.

The town council may pay for a local person to maintain drains, verges and anything Blackburn with Darwen Council’s park rangers are unable to do.

Coun Dave Smith put forward the plan for Sunnyhurst Wood, Whitehall Park, Bold Venture Park and Ashton Park.

In some parks such as Sunnyhurst Wood, the goodwill of friends groups have seen drains and gullies being cleaned after funding cuts led to a lengthsman being axed two years ago.

Coun Dave Smith said: “It is becoming a task to unblock drains and gullies in four of the areas parks.

“We want to see if we can get a lengthsman which would be paid for out of our budget.

“That’s the basic idea. I can see no reason why this town council can’t undertake this or look at this.

“Lengthsman in parks have proved very, very useful and very, very popular.”

Councillors agreed on the idea in principal but debated on how much the lengthsman would be paid and how many hours they would be expected to cover.

Coun Trevor Maxfield, chair, said: “I think we need to set up a meeting with the friends groups to find out exactly what the needs area.”

Dennis Gillibrand, chairman of the Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood said: "There have been a series of cut backs over the years in the number of people employed to maintain the wood, and as a result there has been an adverse effect in the maintainence.

"The lad who does work in the wood on behalf of the council now does a smashing job, but he's only allowed to do what he's down on a schedule for at particular times of the week.

"He can't respond to any other problems we might have with gullys or paths in different areas, and that's a particular concern we have with the fringes of the woods onto the West Pennine Moors.

"I would very much welcome the return of a lengthsman to do the work in other areas, but it's important that we and other friends' groups would have an input over the extra work he is doing."

It seems to be an old term for someone who looks after a stretch of land. I think it's a good idea! We have some nice wooded areas around the town, and I believe they should be maintained properly. Employing ONE person to ensure that is done is not excessive, in my opinion.

Sounds like money well spent.
.
Truth be known, if the money wasn't spent on a lengthsman it would only get wasted on some other hair brained council nonsense or, worse still, dole spongers.

Plan to introduce 'guardians' for Darwen parks?
Seems value for money to me and can’t think of any reason why not. But more than one person is needed, too much work for just the one person to do it properly surely?
-
But how much will it cost?

Well! another ‘Shuttle’ has just dropped through my letterbox. Full of fantastic happenings and wonderful council achievements. I’m sure it’s all true and ‘top marks’ to all concerned. Well worth the reported £12.000 or so for this issue I feel sure!
BUT - Not one word about the awful roads we drive on or the litter and dog dirt everywhere. Nothing about our drug problems, young offenders ASBO failures, robberies and prostitute problems. I’m sure the council are aware of these concerns but never any mention about what is being done in this or any other ‘Shuttle’ council publicity. Graham Burgess, our chief executive has a column in each publication to answer one important question that he thinks we’re all concerned about more than anything else: The council does nothing to support St Georges day? Goodness me, does he not think we don’t have more important concerns than that?
Thank you, but how about answering some of the concerns that effect us all a lot more. Like the upkeep of our parks or those few examples mentioned above perhaps?

What about getting some of the community service people into the woods (mainly Sunnyhurst) and chopping up the felled trees and the wood could be sold for firewood and the money could be put back into the woods.
.
On a recent walk around Sunnyhurst Woods it was very noticeable how many trees were laid on their side and some pensioners in the borough could make use of it for their fires/woodburners?
.
On the guardian topic I think that each park should have their own guardian, it could be definitely a full time job.

In the present economic climate, it's unlikely that we're going to see a guardian for each park or wood.

It should be possible to recruit unpaid volunteers who are on the dole to help out.
It isn't possible because of the bureacracy and rules preventing many people on the dole from making a contribution unless they are helping out with a registered charity. It's alright saying dole-dossers this, scroungers that, but it's the Jobcentre rules that prevent some people from actually doing things.
