COLOUR coded footpaths should be introduced in Darwen town centre to help children find their way safely, according to a councillor.
Coun Simon Huggill is keen on the idea to install the pedestrian pathways scheme after the recent opening of Darwen Leisure Centre and the upcoming opening of Darwen Aldridge Community Academy.
Such schemes were first introduced in the 1990s in major cities such as San Antonio and Toronto.
Coun Huggill said: “I first saw this idea being used in an industrial complex for adults, and I thought it would be a brilliant idea for children.
“The road system in Darwen is quite complex for pedestrians. Vehicles are coming from every direction.
“Something like this would help the children getting off the bus at The Circus to easily find their way to proper crossings for the Academy, to the leisure centre, or even to the library.
“There could be small painted squares in different colours for each one.
“We are always trying to encourage young people to walk and be healthy, so let’s give them some help to do it.”
But the idea has not been enthusiastically welcomed by bosses at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: "Our priority has to be repairing and resurfacing the roads in Darwen, which is what people are asking us to do. Our budget is not endless and we have to be realistic about the money we have to spend.
"We will be improving signage around Darwen town centre, particularly for new developments like the leisure centre and the Academy."

I am not reading that nonsense. A better idea would be to put the money towards resurfacing the current roads. The same clown probably came up with the idea to put bumpy flagstones at crossings - what is that all about and how much has that cost throughout the borough? Surely children are not as daft as this? What a pathetic thing to say when an election is approaching - he actually thinks this is a good idea. Anyone heard of something called a signpost? It

How many blind people do you remember approaching a (not kerb) crossing and walking out into road? How many blind people do you see now walking upto flagstones and thinking ah that saved my life? Serious waste of money and these ideas are created by idiots in traffic management because they know idiot councillors will say yes.

ItBUMPY FLAGSTONES AT ZEBRA CROSSINGS is to aid the partial sighted and blind people that they are at a safe place to cross the road. A superb idea and if it saves one life cost is irrelevant. As to the yellow brick road and all the other colours for the different routes ......... tis time to come down to earth and start looking at the towns basic infrastructure and repair it before spending money on hair brained ideas.

Simple example - the slope from pavement to road in the triangle next to plumbase and white lion (nice free paint job I suspect!) is at a steep gradient and no bumps - never seen a blind person walk into a car there. Decades visually impaired (my nan) survived with sticks, sense, or guide dog and bumpy cobbles were never any help. To help them you would need them at the EDGE of every curb and not just at a crossing.

Will it be ok as long as we don't spend any extra money to make life easier for them? As long as you "Moaning Darreners" get your free swim life is good. Lets bring back the red buses with nice conductors while we're at it
