Colour coded footpaths idea for Darwen

COLOUR coded footpaths should be introduced in Darwen town centre to help children find their way safely, according to a councillor.

Coun Simon Huggill is keen on the idea to install the pedestrian pathways scheme after the recent opening of Darwen Leisure Centre and the upcoming opening of Darwen Aldridge Community Academy.

Such schemes were first introduced in the 1990s in major cities such as San Antonio and Toronto.

Coun Huggill said: “I first saw this idea being used in an industrial complex for adults, and I thought it would be a brilliant idea for children.

“The road system in Darwen is quite complex for pedestrians. Vehicles are coming from every direction.

“Something like this would help the children getting off the bus at The Circus to easily find their way to proper crossings for the Academy, to the leisure centre, or even to the library.

“There could be small painted squares in different colours for each one.

“We are always trying to encourage young people to walk and be healthy, so let’s give them some help to do it.”

But the idea has not been enthusiastically welcomed by bosses at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: "Our priority has to be repairing and resurfacing the roads in Darwen, which is what people are asking us to do. Our budget is not endless and we have to be realistic about the money we have to spend.

"We will be improving signage around Darwen town centre, particularly for new developments like the leisure centre and the Academy."

I am not reading that nonsense. A better idea would be to put the money towards resurfacing the current roads.
The same clown probably came up with the idea to put bumpy flagstones at crossings - what is that all about and how much has that cost throughout the borough?
Surely children are not as daft as this?
What a pathetic thing to say when an election is approaching - he actually thinks this is a good idea.
Anyone heard of something called a signpost?
It

BUMPY FLAGSTONES AT ZEBRA CROSSINGS is to aid the partial sighted and blind people that they are at a safe place to cross the road.
A superb idea and if it saves one life cost is irrelevant.

As to the yellow brick road and all the other colours for the different routes ......... tis time to come down to earth and start looking at the towns basic infrastructure and repair it before spending money on hair brained ideas.

I know what they are allegedly for, in reality they are a waste of our money that went into a private company. For decades blind people existed without them. How many blind people do you remember approaching a (not kerb) crossing and walking out into road? How many blind people do you see now walking upto flagstones and thinking ah that saved my life? Serious waste of money and these ideas are created by idiots in traffic management because they know idiot councillors will say yes.
i.e. Would you like us to come and lay patch work coloured tarmac down the middle of the road? I thought hash white lines did this job.
Now we have this idea and I really can't believe that he has the balls to say it. What a CLOWN!

The Academy, the Library the Leisure centre. Three of the biggest, most conspicuous
buildings in Darwen. If people can't see to get to them it would be cheaper to supply spectacles to everybody who needs to find them. Coloured flagstones, barmy!

Is Councillor Huggill for real??? He's defending the delays in repairing the lunar landscape of Darwen's roads, but wants pretty little coloured lines painted all over the place. He's lost it! Completely bonkers! Madder than Mad Jack McMad, the winner of the Maddington Mad Man Competition!

"I was watching The Wizard of Oz with the kids and i thought, what a wonderful idea we should have colour coded paths in darwen leading to a wizard with a hot air balloon to take us to safety"

that was the actual comment to the press.

Just wait until he watches Bedknobs and Broomsticks this weekend....

quote from capitabackhander
As this is what you think about helping the visualy impaired members of our society, how do feel about people with physical disabilities using the new leisue centre in Darwen. Will it be ok as long as we don't spend any extra money to make life easier for them?
As long as you "Moaning Darreners" get your free swim life is good.
Lets bring back the red buses with nice conductors while we're at it

Got me wrong, the cobbles don't help the visually impaired. Simple example - the slope from pavement to road in the triangle next to plumbase and white lion (nice free paint job I suspect!) is at a steep gradient and no bumps - never seen a blind person walk into a car there. Decades visually impaired (my nan) survived with sticks, sense, or guide dog and bumpy cobbles were never any help. To help them you would need them at the EDGE of every curb and not just at a crossing.
Not sure what physical disability and the Leisure Centre has to do with daft traffic management systems.

capitabackhander please accept my apologies I thought you were talking about the paving at pelican crossings that let the blind people know they are at a crossing.

I have had more than a few beers and I am starting to think this coloured paving could be a good idea. How about a path from Chav Central pub to the kebab house on Duckworth Street?
