Darwen in Bloom festival plans announced

DARWEN is set to become a floral haven after plans for a Darwen in Bloom festival were announced.

Brainchild of the town’s shop and business association, Darwen in Bloom could see the town ‘full of colour’ from the motorway boundary through to the town centre.

Darwen Town Council this week agreed in principle to fund baskets and hangers for businesses that want to join in. Councillors hope Darwen in Bloom will become an annual festival attracting coach trips from around the country as part of a national ‘in bloom’ contest.

Eileen Guy, chairman of Darwen shop and business association said: “We are trying to improve the look of Darwen from Duckworth Street to Market Street. We want the entrance to the town to be full of colour.

“We want to make the town more appealing to bring more people in.”

Phil Jones, For Darwen town councillor, said: “The proposal is to fund the empty baskets so shop owners can fill them with what they see fit.

“It is my hope this will become an annual bloom festival and we can go into competition with this. There are coach trips that go around the towns. It is a very attractive proposition. From the motorway boundaries it will be wonderful for the town.”

Meanwhile, Coun Brenda Crownshaw is urging Blackburn with Darwen Council to return planters that were moved from Market Square during regeneration work.

Nut Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration, said: “The tiered plant pots are not appropriate for the new modern market square design.

He added: “We will be planting a decorated flower bed to mark the centenary of the Girls Guides in June opposite Boots and are also looking at bringing more colour into the town centre through planters and hanging baskets, which are more in keeping with the look of the town centre.”

Oh, for FFS - what the hell does this DO for the people living in Darwen? Does it clean up crime, deal with anti-social behaviour, tidy up the streets, make it a nice place to live (chokes as anyone with common sense can see that's never going to happen because no one can see past thier nose on the council it would seem! making names for themselves, receiving plaudits for 'the good idea of the week') etc etc etc .. is this what our CTX is being spent on?

Good ideas are always good on paper. The problem is if you shove flowers everywhere do you not think that anti-social mob living in Darwen, the yobs who go around smashing anything that looks 'nice' simply because they are very ugly people inside and prefer to live in a toilet because it's 'normal' life to them, what do you think is going to happen? Darwen is NOT and never will be somewhere like Clitheroe or a more upmarket town/region where things can be safely left in the public view without them being trashed! This not being negative but facing the reality of the situation.

Flowers will not drag Darwen up by the bootstraps.

Obviously you lot on the council don't listen to the comments made by people outside Darwen.

Still what can you expect when Mr Cottam is on it. The insane ideas he's got in mind for 'revamping' Blackburn shopping centre says it all. 'Revamp?'. Only been going on since I was a child and it still looks like down town Beirut! WHY CAN'T YOU GET IT RIGHT???!

So you wont be holidaying in sunny Darwen then, any one would think you did not like the garden city of the north.

I agree with most of what you say , the scumbags of Darwen and there are plenty of them bring the town down , but we have positive things happening too . As for your argument about Clitheroe , this now holds no water , soon Clitheroe will have a ........Lidl ( shocks horror ) ..........and a ....................
....................
...........MOSQUE ( Begad and shame ) , and Clitheroe has its own band of scumbags too . Give it a couple of years your Clitheroe PARADISE will be a normal **** town , so please remove your head from your arsehole .

Yet more tripe from his Ribble Valley Hideaway!

30 years ago, Darwen was a Tory town; full of small businesses, a town with civic pride and well kept houses, parks and shop fronts. There is no reason why that cannot return, with enough willing from enough people. The chav element (and there are a good few in Clitheroe by the way!) can be overcome.

All you ever do is moan moan and moan some more. Yobs this anti social behaviour that. I live in the Marsh House ward of Darwen and i walk past the majority of windows on a daily basis. I do not see one smashed up window, not even in bus stops.

Darwen does not need pulling up by the bootstraps, you snob!. I am from this town and yes it does need some improvement but it is people like you moaning and not getting off your backside and taking action like litter picking etc that ensure this town stays at the level it's at.

Hope they are going to clean the acres of litter and rubbish which adorn Darwen wherever one looks. If in doubt have a walk round the steets surrounding the new academy or travel through Darwen on the train. The residents of Darwen should be ashamed of the state of their streets, back alleys and open spaces.
Before tarting it up with flowers they need to get out with binbags and litter pickers!

I have been to most towns in east lancs, and there is not a lot between them, as for Clitheroe, you cant even have a nativety display thanks to local yobs. Darwen is no worse or better than most east lancs towns. It would be nice for some keyboard warriors to come up with solutions to all the worlds problems, but then again its easier just to moan.

Maybe the LET describing Alan Cottam as a Nut Coun isn't too far from the mark!! Davidoff - you are correct in some of your comments but you haven't offered any constructive solutions. Anyone can moan and write negative comments. Noticer - some of the residents should be ashamed but the majority of Darreners are decent law abiding people. We just seem to have more than our fair share of people who don't care. As for the idea of funding hanging baskets, maybe any available funding would be better directed into ideas for removing the existing rubbish and geting into the schools to give a strong message to the younger generation that littering is unacceptable. This message may, and I say only may, then get to the older generation with a more positive result for all. Davidoff - that's what I mean. Something constructive. It may not work but at least its a possible solution.

Creating jobs would help more than flowers.
.
Get people working, make it more profitable to work than claim benefit. Give them a structure in their lives, a reason to get out of bed in a morning.
.
Get the dole-wallers cleaning up the streets from the rubbbish.
.
In the 1930's, during the great depression, Hitler, so my daddy told me, used the unemployed to create the national highway that still exists to this day.
.
We're now into the 3rd generation of don't work/can't work/benefit scroungers and what do our leaders suggest.........?

I think Hitler did a few other things too! On balance he was a very naughty boy.

enock-powell, we do have a mosque in Darwen. Just shows how unobtrusive they are when bigots don't know they are there! We have enough older people to care for and streets to keep clean etc. that all the unemployed on benefits could give something back to the community. Unfortunately those in power don't have the bottle to do anything about it!

A few commentators on here think that the "keyboard warriors" ( I quite like that phrase) should stop moaning and come up with some positive suggestions. So! here goes.
How about getting all the local schools to plant seedlings and bulbs in their schools or at the pupils homes so that the council gardeners can collect them to put in the planters and areas around the town. That way the young people will have a vested interest in making sure they are not vandalised and maybe they will get some pride out of it. Perhaps the council could award a prize to the best display produced by a school. There you go, two positive suggestions, let's see you moaners come up with some others.
