Fountain will flow again soon in Darwen park

A HISTORIC drinking fountain is set to return to Whitehall Park after extensive renovation.

The cast-iron fountain, donated by the Catlow family in 1906, has been dismantled, stripped back and repainted after rust had set in.

Work started on the project last May after the Friends of Whitehall Park secured a £20,000 grant from waste disposal company Sita.

The fountain was meant to be returned by October, but the work has taken longer than expected.

Friends chairman John Starbuck said: “It’s taken quite a while, but we’re hopeful it will be back in the park pretty soon. The work has involved stripping down to the bare metal and repainting it with a special formula, so hopefully it will last for many years to come.

“Also, the missing details that have fallen off over the years have been remade and replaced.”

The fountain was originally made by the Walter McFarlane Foundry in Glasgow. A reopening ceremony will take place when it is fully installed.

Not being cynical, but just another target for the apallingly uncivilized yobs in the town to destroy, deface or worse. Anything good in the town, any nice to look at, enjoy appears to be like radiation to the few who really don't want to join the rest of the human race, live in a nice town, don't appear to understand that trashing their own streets isn't exactly 'social' behaviour in anyway. But anything good, soon gets wrecked. Simply, they will not understand what a marvel, a thing of beauty such a restoration is, to view and look at, they will just see it as another target to wreck for the sake of it. It's going on in Darwen daily in various places if you look around, you will soon find at least one gang of tribal wearing shell suits (please, those went out of fashion in the early 90s!) whose aim and sole aim since birth is to destroy, because they don't know any better. They cannot respect themselves, how'd you expect them to respect things like this? It's more than likely a giant tea pot to them, and the big, rustic looking iron balls opposite Boots on the grass there, probably giant marbles. The kestrel, the children's play are and gardens. These are not just mindless yobs, these are individuals who are destroying the image of the town but also shaming it!

Agreed Davidoff. What we need to do is take money away from these people who seem to have nothing to do all day. How long before the Darwen Leisure Centre has new messages on it? If income support was reduced, harsher sentences on thieves imposed, do gooders forced to face those of us who are out of our homes 12 hours a day, working for much less than half the average annual national wage, then we might get a result. Prison sentences for parents of children who consistently prevent those of us who pay and want to enjoy our environment.

Agree with both the above comments except for the bit about income support: being on income support doesn't make you a criminal, anti-social or a drunken yob. There are plenty of millionaire footballers who are yobs and plenty more people on income support who are decent people.

Drinking fountains and civic pride are a thing of the past and it's folly to try and bring most of it back. Get rid of the scum first.
