New bench in Darwen town centre

A NEW bench has been installed in Darwen town centre.

The bench, which replaces one removed from outside the Post Office during regeneration work last year, was ordered by Blackburn with Darwen Council to improve the environment for shoppers.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: “The bench was ordered as part of the town centre street furniture.

“It was not installed because we wanted to make sure we found the best place for it.

“We asked the people of Darwen where they wanted it to go and this was the most popular suggestion.

“It was decided that it should go round the tree opposite the Post Office at The Circus because it will be well used and is set in a nice environment.”

YES! It's a bench but only about 3-4 people can sit on the "Bench" so why did'nt they put another "Bench" if I can remember right was their not two benches their in the first place? Any way I still think they should try and get the Traffic Lights right>

The lights WERE right a few months ago but someone has clearly set them back to original moron setting. The traffic is not greater but the delays are bigger re light settings at the circus. The bus lane lights and Health Centre Junction have the joke settings enabled.

This is not just any bench, this is a magical bench. Forged in the fiery furnaces of Mordor by the hands of the Dark Lord. This bench was carried over the plains of Rohan and through the Misty Mountains to the west of Middle Earth at the end of the third age.

Three rings For the Elvin Kings under the sky.
Seven for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of stone.
Nine for the mortal men doomed to die.
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne.
In the land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them.
One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

Beware when parking your bum on this Bench

I'll second that Merlin, here's to a postive 2009, you could come over and sit on our bench and tell everyone how Darwen used to be!!!!

Have a good one

If its set in the ground as high as recently sited other new benches in Darwen then i suggest they also install step ladders. Iv'e never seen, anywhere benches where people sitting on them are dangling their feet in mid-air, but so typical of the local authority

I can see now why this bench made the headlines.

Mystically crafted for giants.

I must brave the wilds of Darwen and go to see it for myself. I vow to fight my way through the one-way system, across the road of the devil and gingerly tread the cobblestones of broken legs, just to catch a glimpse.

It's good that there's now more seating in Darwen town centre but, yes, the seats are far too high. I'm tall but I had to perch on them so that my feet could touch the ground.

The seats near the outside wall of the 3 day market seem a bit shorter than those across the road from Ethel Austins and all those going down past Boots Chemist which all need at least 4 inches (maybe more) lopping off.

May be the druggies will use it and then they will be nabbed!! Anyway, if the bench is set too high and feet don't reach the ground, this will stop people getting their feet wet in the many puddles which beset Darwen town centre.

A Merry Christmas to all those miserable bloggers and a Happy New Year - hopefully they won't be so flippin' serious next year!!

Moan, Moan, Moan...........
