PARENTS have been urged to check their children are immunised against measles, after outbreaks in Blackpool and Manchester.

Uptake of the MMR vaccine in Blackburn with Darwen is just 85 per cent for the first dose, which should be given by age two, and 83.5 per cent for the second dose, which should be given by age five.

Mike Leaf, director of public health for Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust, said: “I really do recommend that all young people up to age 25 check that they have had both doses and think seriously about having an MMR jab if they were not protected against measles, mumps and rubella as youngsters.

“I would strongly advise anyone with concerns to consult their family doctor.

“An outbreak can happen anywhere and uptake of both doses of MMR across Cumbria and Lancashire varies.

"Measles can be a very serious illness and in rare circumstances it can kill or cause complications such as meningitis and encephalitis.

“MMR is safe, proven and effective.

“Two doses will guarantee lifelong protection against measles, mumps and rubella.”
