POLICE officers in Blackburn have wished everyone who is celebrating Eid a safe and happy occasion.

Inspector Martyn Holt said: "Eid ul Fitr is a very important day for Muslims across Lancashire and around the world.

"It's a joyous day that will be celebrated in our communities by people from many different nationalities.

"Our officers will play their part to ensure our communities and any visitors are kept safe and, working with our partners, we will make sure that there is minimal traffic disruption.

"There will be increased police patrols to offer reassurance.

"I would like to remind everyone that any form of crime, antisocial behaviour, dangerous driving and public disorder will not be tolerated and that we will take appropriate action against anyone participating in such actions.

"We've been working with the local authority to ensure safe and trouble free celebrations.

"We have a long tradition of celebrating festivals and occasions from different cultures and religions.

"Eid highlights some of the traditions and values common to us all, values such as unity, community spirit and helping the needy.

"We hope everyone celebrating Eid has the chance to enjoy this special day with their nearest and dearest.

"And we wish everyone a happy Eid Mubarak."
