A MUM has joined the fight against littering by placing brightly painted pebbles around her town in a bid to teach youngsters to not drop rubbish.

Jenny Glancy-Potter has put more than a hundred pebbles across Darwen.

The 44-year-old said she regularly goes out with her four-year-old twins, Seth and Pearl, and hides the palm-sized pebbles near schools and other areas where children go.

The family have painted the pebbles with slogans which say ‘don’t be a litter bug’, ‘use a bin’ and ‘love where you live’.

Mrs Glancy-Potter said she got the idea after joining social media groups ‘B B rocks’ and ‘Keep Darwen Tidy’.

She said: “I wanted to put my own spin on keeping the environment clean and tidy.

“I started painting anti-littering slogans on the pebbles and used the Facebook groups to help children go out and find them.

“I’ve had lots of great feedback from parents. The children get excited when they find the rocks - but they also get to learn about why it's important to not drop rubbish.

“If we can get it into young people’s minds now, they will carry it into adulthood and hopefully pass it onto their children.”

Mrs Glancy-Potter, who also runs her own painted pebble art business, Potters Positive, became a litter picker through Blackburn with Darwen Council’s voluntary scheme.

She said: “My kids love going out and planting the pebbles for other children to find.

“I see kids find them and for them, its like finding treasure, you can see they are really excited.

“When you see areas that have not litter, it really makes a difference, it looks so much better.

“If we can keep this going then we can get a nice, clean tidy town.

“We want children to consciously be aware that dropping litter is not good for the environment or the appearance of their town.

“We want to take pride in where we live. We all want to leave in a clean town I hope I can do my part to make that happen.”
