ROADS across the borough will be resurfaced next month.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council will be undertaking surface dressing works during July and residents whose streets are detailed in the programme will receive letters advising them of specific dates, prior to the works commencing.

The works will be carried out between 8am and 6pm.

A council spokesman said: "To minimise disruption, and enable the contractor to work as quickly as possible, we would be extremely grateful, if your street is identified for surface dressing works, and you have a vehicle, if you would park it elsewhere, prior to the works beginning at 8am.

"Access to your road/street and drive may be restricted, for a short period during the works, as the sub-contractor works down one side of the road and then the other.

"Occasionally the contractors may work beyond 6pm in order to complete the work, to avoid having to come back and cause a second day of disruption.

"However, this type of work is subject to the weather conditions. It needs to be dry and the temperature above 5 celsius.

"There could be a delay if the weather conditions are not favourable. If there is a delay, the work will be carried out the following day. We would ask for your patience, should this be necessary."

As part of the process, manhole and gully work will be carried out about one week later and replacement of road lines (for example disabled bays, H bars) will take place after this.

Road maintenance services workers will post notices on the road prior to this additional work being undertaken.

The spokesman added: "When the surface or sub-surface layers of the road have deteriorated to a point that they need to be replaced, we undertake resurfacing, by removing the existing layer and laying a new surface.

"Complete resurfacing of roads is involved and expensive, and whilst it will normally last at least 15 years, the cost means we can only treat a small number of roads annually, with the budgets made available to us.

"We therefore surface dress many of our roads; this involves treating the road surface to stop it getting worse. These treatments are usually more economical, which means we can maintain more roads for the same budget.

"This is why some of the worst roads are not worked on first."
