THE BEST place in East Lancashire to get a pie as voted by you can be revealed.

We asked our readers to tell us about their favourite pies and where they like to buy them from.

Haworth’s Bakery in Darwen came out on top by polling 47 per cent of the vote while Cissy Green pies in Haslingden was second (16 per cent) and Tunstill’s Bakery in Darwen was third (14 per cent).

Dean Haworth, owner of Suddell Street winner was delighted with the news and how many people got behind them.

He said: “It makes all the hard work and early mornings even more worthwhile.

“It is not as easy as everybody thinks to make a good pie and this is a nice reward.

“I just want to thank people for voting for us.

“I would urge people to continue to support local bakeries as it is so easy to go to a supermarket and pick up a pie but they should get them from ones like ours as you should use it and not lose it.”

Pie-making has been in the blood for Dean as his dad Keith owned the bakery selling pies for 35 years before he took over the business two years ago.

He said: “We are well-known in the area for our meat and potato and meat pies as it is an old recipe passed through the generations.

“Our ingredients are locally sourced as the meat in the meat and potato is from Leemings Butchers in Darwen and the ale from the Steak and Ale pie is from Darwen too.

“Other meats are coming from Ribble Valley including the ones used in our sausage rolls and we like to buy local.”

Dean admits the business has a mix of traditional pies such as meat and potato and chicken and mushroom as well as his Real Thai Pie Company produce.

They offer red thai curry, vegan green curry and other spicy pies.

It is not their first award as Dean admits they have collected titles at the British Pie Awards.

He said: “I think we have to move on (with the times) by obviously wanting to keep the traditional pies as well as offering something a bit different with the curry pies.”

“It is one of my passions so it is good to maximise our pies on sale and adding it to the background my dad taught me.

“We are a nation of pie lovers just because it is an easy and tasty food to eat.”
