A FRUSTRATED motorist shared a video showing the moment two illegally overtaking vehicles collided.

Darwen resident Andre Andertwise said he regularly sees cars caught in rush hour queues pulling out into the path of oncoming traffic to try and get round the congestion.

Last Monday he caught one queue jumper on camera as the driver attempted to avoid the congestion by driving down the wrong side of the road.

Unfortunately, another motorist had the same idea and the vehicles ended up colliding in Heys Lane, Darwen.

He said: “Many times driving to work in a morning I see, while waiting patiently in the traffic queue, drivers deciding they will not wait.

“They proceed to dangerously overtake the stationary traffic on the wrong side of the road before turning down a side street on the right, from which they cannot see if someone is going to emerge turning left without looking right.

“It happens in Heys Lane, Dove Lane, Lloyd Street and Gillibrand Street.

“On November 20 the driver of the car behind the car behind me decided to illegally overtake on a pedestrian crossing.

“He intended to drive down the wrong side of the road for over 30 metres passing the car behind me, myself and the car in front of me before turning up Heys Lane.

“At least that was the idea, but in the meantime the driver of the car behind me decided to do the same thing and pulled out, still 15 metres from the Heys Lane junction, without looking in his offside mirror.

“Needless to say the resulting collision was just what they deserved.”

Darwen Mayor, Cllr Roy Davies, said the congestion has been caused by traffic on the A666.

He said: “ It does not surprise me at all that people are behaving like this.

“The A666 is so congested it’s like a rolling road block.

“Even at the best of times its chocka, and at rush hours its unbearable.

“People are trying to use all the other arteries going out of Darwen which is making it much worse.

“As soon as people get stuck in that kind of traffic they get daft, I wish I could say it was just the young ones doing it but it’s not.”
