A FAMOUS gritter was the star of BBC One’s The One Show last night.

‘Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-Slip Machiney’ is multi purpose vehicle distributed Darwen-based company Multihog.

The vehicle, which is currently being used as a gritter in Doncaster, accepts different attachments on the front and rear allowing it to transform into anything from pothole mending machine to a grass cutter.

The machine was given its name after the council there took to Twitter to get suggestions on what to christen the Multihog.

Over 40,000 votes were cast in what was deemed the #DoncasterGrittingWorldCup and the council were inundated with suggestions from members of the public and celebrities alike.

Comedians Rufus Hound, Bob Mortimer and Curtis Stigers chipped in with efforts such as ‘Grit Balls o’ Fire’ and other less savoury suggestions.

A council spokesman confirmed: “It seems to have cheered Britain up.

It’s been amazing and got people interested in gritting.”

The multi purpose vehicle appeared on the Pothole Wars section the programme which saw different methods of pothole repair put to the test and judged on time, price and effectiveness with the aim of exploring the different types of repairs available.

Josh Sweeney, Marketing Manager at Multihog UK said: “We were approached by The One Show before Gritsy started trending on Twitter so the show's air date couldn't have come at a better time.

“The exposure has been great and we have picked up a lot off enquiries off the back of trending on Twitter.

“I’d like to think we are well established in our industry but it’s nice for the public to gain an insight into how things like potholes are dealt with.

“The #DoncasterGrittingWorldCup has really helped raise awareness in a fun way.

“We’re hoping to reach out to people outside of the industry to carry this creativity forward with amusing and/or practical #job4hog suggestions.”
