A DRIVER allegedly crashed his 4x4 into another car before calmly parking up and walking off with his wife and children.

Witnesses said they could not believe what had happened and said they thought the 4x4 driver may have been drinking.

Police are investigating the smash, which happened in Railway Road, Darwen, at about 9pm on Saturday.

It is understood a black Mitsubishi Outlander crashed into a white Volkswagen Golf.

Police at the scene confirmed they were investigating the claims made by witnesses.

The Volkswagen driver, who lives in Darwen, said that after his car was hit, the other driver parked his vehicle in the Darwen railway station car park and walked away with his two daughters and wife, leaving his headlights on.

He said: "I'm still a bit shaken up to be honest.

"I just saw headlights coming straight towards us around this bend.

"I then saw him coming towards us and whacked right into us.

"The man parked his car up by the station and then walked off with his wife and two girls.

"You can't move the car backwards or forwards.

"It's an expensive car and the parts aren't cheap to replace. The cost will likely be in the thousands."

Mark Faffren, who lives a street away from the scene and saw the incident, said: "I have never seen anything like this and I'm still shocked to be honest.

"I couldn't believe it when the driver just walked out with the kids.

"I just hope the children are okay."

The white Volkswagen was stuck in the middle of the road for about an hour.

A police spokesman said the investigation was ongoing.
