FREE transport will be available for elderly and disabled people attending a brass band competition.

Council bosses have arranged for assisted transport company Dial-a-ride to offer free transport to and from the Blackburn and Darwen Brass Band competition.

The competition, which is in its third year is being held as part of the National Heritage Weekend, will see 18 bands from across the North West compete for a chance to win prize money totalling £2,600.

The competitions will take place on Sunday in Darwen town centre from 12pm until 6pm.

Cllr Hollings said: “The initiative is designed not only to promote the event but also to enable elderly and disabled people to visit a unique and enjoyable day out in pleasant and safe surroundings.

Cllr Peter Hollings said: “It is our intention in Darwen to promote social inclusion within our senior members of society.

“This is the sort of event that not only offers high quality free entertainment but also offers the chance for people to socialise.
