A FRESH bid to redevelop the site of the former Waterfield Mill in Darwen has been given the go-ahead.

Several developers have eyed up the Balmoral Road site in recent years, outlining differing housing bids.

Twin Valley Homes wanted to erect 35 homes, to rent, in 2013 and 2014, which was replaced by Premier Property Holding’s attempt to install 26 houses there.

And now Waterfield Development Ltd has secured approval from the borough council for 28 properties, a mixture of two-bedroom terraced homes and three and four-bedroom semi-detached houses.

Planning agent Matthew Wyatt said: “The proposal provides 28 high-quality dwellings to meet local demand in a sustainable location close to a town centre with local amenities and good transport links.

“The design responds to the existing site topography whilst creating an open context with landscaped areas and view of the areas.”

The former cotton mill, which dates back to 1897, was demolished in 2013.

Waterfield Mill was run by a wealthy Quaker family, which spawned arts and crafts expert Stanley Webb Davies.
