DARWEN Town Council is set to donate money to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund after a plaque was unveiled in tribute to two Spitfire pilots from the area.

Councillors have decided to give £150 to the fund which helps all serving and former members of the force as well as their families.

The plaque is now in place next to the Spitfire model in the town centre with Trevor Sydney Wade and William Meville Lamberton’s names engraved on it.

The former RAF officer Robin Mitchell, who had the plaque made, has also compiled leaflets documenting the history of the Spitfire.

The leaflets are available from the town’s library in Knott Street.

They are free but people can make a small donation to the RAF benevolent fund if they wish to.

Mr Mitchell said: “It has taken a long time to put this research together but it’s such a great story.

“I can’t believe someone has found out more about it until now.

“I have really enjoyed learning about the pilots and spending time on this.”

The leaflet covers the making of the Spitfire, a biography of the pilots and what happened to them after the Second World War.
