A GOLFER has raised more than £1,000 for a cancer charity.

Kathryn Knowles, of Ainsworth Close, Darwen, chose the Rosemere Cancer Foundation as her charity while she was lady captain at the town’s golf club.

During her 12-month tenure, Mrs Knowles raised £1,513.50 for the cause which she said was extremely worthwhile.

She said: “I chose Rosemere because I know quite a few people who have been treated there and I’ve visited people in the hospice.

“I saw people getting treatment from 8am to 7pm or 8pm and it covers people all over the North West.

“It’s a really worthwhile cause.”

The foundation brings services to cancer patients throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria via their local hospitals and the region’s specialist treatment centre at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Her donation was made up from proceeds from the Lady Captain’s Day competition and raffle plus money from collection boxes, including a ‘fines’ box behind the clubhouse bar for players whose balls went into the bunkers and water.

There was also a £700 contribution from club member Eric Parkington who organises an annual competition.

Rosemere spends the donations it receives on equipment, research and training which cannot be funded by the NHS and has given East Lancashire Hospitals Trust £160,000 to spend on its cancer services.
