TWO major organisations will be working with students in Darwen this week to focus on giving them more confidence in their employment skills.

Lucite International will be partnering with Soroptimist International in Blackburn to deliver a programme to 40 girls at Darwen Vale High School.

The sessions will focus on finding out what career paths the students may want to take and also encourage them to consider taking up jobs in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Liz Townend, a member of Soroptomist, said: “What we have found is that girls especially do not put themselves forward and we want them to think higher about what they can achieve.

“We are going to be asking the girls what skills they feel they have naturally, such as communication or working under pressure, and then a questionnaire we have will hopefully make them see what careers they would be capable of doing.

“Then they are also going to do some team challenges to see how they get on using those skills.

“We want them to realise you don’t have to be the brightest to succeed in life.”

The sessions will be delivered on Wednesday at the Blackburn Road school.
