FALLEN ‘razor-sharp’ railings that have blocked a Darwen alleyway for months have sparked community calls to have them removed.

Resident Mark Westall has spoken out over the railings, which fell from a wall near Dove Lane.

The iron bars belong to manufacturing company Horizon Foam in Lloyd Street, which has said it was were unaware of them collapsing.

Mr Westall, a St Peter’s Residents’ Association member, said they have been left there for several months and are a danger to passers by.

The 52-year-old said: “They’ve become a real problem now and it’s a real eyesore.

“The railings are rather large and razor-sharp, can you imagine if a little child took a tumble and fell on one of them?

“I have had several residents ask me about it and being part of the residents association they asked me if I could do something about it.

“They are several feet high and as a result are partially blocking some of the houses as a result.

“The company behind the alley need to get them fixed as soon as possible to avoid the concerns being a reality.”

The company has said that it wasn’t aware of the railings and that they will be fixed by the end of the week.

Cllr Paul Browne, who represents Sudell Ward on Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “That alleyway behind the warehouse has been a problem for a long time.

“The railings need to go as soon as possible or be repaired to avoid injury.

“However, there is always a lot of rubbish down there and it needs to be kept clean.

“I’m not blaming the company, as it’s usually household rubbish, but people need to be more concious about what they’re throwing away and where the rubbish is going.”

Charlotte Taylor, owner of Horizon Foam, said: “I was not aware of the situation the railings were in.

“If someone who was worried about them had come round and asked to have them cleared up, we would have done it straight away. It will be fixed by the end of this week.”
