MORE than 100 concerned market traders, shoppers and residents attended a public consultation about the future of the three-day market in Darwen, which is ear marked for closure.

St Peter's Church in Church Street was bursting at the seams with people who wished to voice their opinion on the market after it was recommended for closure by Blackburn with Darwen Council last night.

The meeting was chair by Darwen MP Jake Berry, executive member for Regeneration in Blackburn with Darwen Council, councillor Phil Riley and leader of the borough council, councillor Mohammed Khan.

Several questions were raised by the audience regarding where council bosses have spent traders rent, the cost of demolishing the market and what would replace it.

Mr Berry said: "I was very pleased to see so many people attend the meeting to find out the future of the market,  it is something that so many of us are concerned about."
