A 15-year-old boy has been arrested following the death of a Darwen teenager after she took suspected ecstasy.

Sky Nicol, 16, was found unconscious by paramedics at a home in Greenway Street in the town on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old girl from Darwen who was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of ecstasy has been bailed to May 20 and a 46-year-old woman, who is also from the town and was arrested on suspicion of obstructing the course of justice, was released no charge.

She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of two offences of possessing a class B drug, of possession with intent to supply a class B drug and of possessing ecstasy with intent to supply. She has been bailed to May 20.

Police have said they were treating the youngster’s death as ‘unexplained’ after it was believed she suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.

Tributes have been paid to the former Darwen Vale High School and The Heights Free School student on social media and a special page called ‘In loving memory of Sky Nicol’ has also been set up on Facebook.

The teenager, who lived in Laurel Avenue, was found at around 6.45pm.

Sky's dad David, who runs the Prince of Wales pub, in Quaker Lane, Darwen, has said he is ‘struggling to come to terms with his loss’.

He said: “You don’t expect to be burying your daughter.

“This has come as a huge shock to me and the rest of the family.

“When I turned up at the hospital I thought that I would see her and that she would be ok but that’s when I was told that there was nothing else that the doctors could do for her and she passed away shortly afterwards.

“It’s still very raw for me and it’s still sinking in that she is gone.

“I’m struggling to come to terms with what’s happened.

“I have no idea where she would have come across this drug ecstasy and it’s out of character for her to have tried it.

“I would hope that her death makes other young people think twice before using it.”

The former pupil of The Heights Free School in Blackburn, who lived in Laurel Avenue in the town, was found at around 6.45pm.

Hundreds of Sky’s family and friends took to social media yesterday to pay tribute to the teenager who also attended Darwen Vale High School.

A special page called ‘In loving memory of Sky Nicol’ has also been set up.

Friend Danny Shack posted: “I can’t believe you’re gone.

“It’s finally hitting me that I’m never going to get to see you again. I love you so much. RIP.”

Demi Aspinall also posted: “Sleep tight my gorgeous girl.

“You will always be remembered and missed.

“Just wishing I had a chance to say a last goodbye.”

Headteacher of The Heights Free School, Hannah Speakman, said Sky would be remembered for her ‘big personality and infectious smile’.

She said: “Sky started at The Heights in Year Nine back in 2013 following an alternative provision curriculum and left in Summer 2015.

“Her specialist areas were sport and leisure and performing arts.

“Sky was a well-liked girl with a big personality and will be sadly missed by pupils and staff alike.

“Sky excelled at outdoor education and could always be relied upon to lift your spirits with her infectious smile.

“Support will be available in school for pupils who need it and this summer we will be awarding our performing arts trophy in Sky’s memory.

“Our thoughts are with Sky’s family at this sad time.”

Principal of Darwen Vale High School, Fiona Jack, also described Sky as ‘a lovely, friendly and open person’.

The youngster attended the school until 2013 when she moved to The Heights.

Mrs Jack said: “We were really sad to hear the news. We just want to send our thoughts to her family and friends.

“Sky was certainly very popular and she was really well liked.

“She was a character and she was a smasher. She had a very charming way about her.

“We just want to make sure we look after the youngsters who are struggling with the news. We want to take care of them.”

Sudell councillor Paul Browne, who lives in Greenway Street, said: “I am deeply shocked that a young girl of 16 has died through drugs.

“I am so sorry for the family at this time and I hope that this will send out a message to youngsters about drug usage.

“I think it’s something we are going to have to crack down on somehow.

“I would advise young people to keep off drugs altogether, it’s never the answer.”

A police spokesman said: “The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this time. They are being supported by specially trained officers.”
