AMERICAN pop star Jason Derulo’s much-anticipated appearance at an East Lancashire nightclub has been cancelled.

Club bosses at Level One Nightclub, in Darwen, said they were forced to cancel over concerns at other events attended by the star.

A spokesman for the singer said he was never booked to perform but only to "turn up after the show and hang out".

Following a gig at the HMV Velvet Room, in Dublin, fans took to social media to complain about Mr Derulo reportedly refusing to talk, sing or acknowledge his fans.

Keele University then had to cancel its gig on Saturday before the Tramps Nightclub, in Worcester, experienced issues with Mr Derulo arriving late on Saturday.

Leon Kelly, manager at Level One Nightclub, in Market Street, said he was extremely disappointed to cancel the gig but said he couldn’t run the risk of leaving customers unhappy.

He said: “We have built up a brand and had so many great artists come in, and I always want to put our customers first. There would have been a riot if Jason had come in and not sung anything or not interacted with the crowd.

“If he’d got on the mic and proved that he wanted to be here and appreciated everyone coming, then no-one would have kicked off, but it really didn’t seem like that’s what was going to happen.

“Patrons of Level One have come to expect and have enjoyed great performances by many major artists in the past year and will do in the future.

“We take our integrity, name and reputation for presenting these shows very seriously and hope people will understand our decision.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and will be issuing full refunds.”

Mr Kelly is now in the process of refunding hundreds of customers who were waiting to see the pop star who has achieved 11 platinum selling singles.

A spokesman for Jason Derulo’s management team said: “Jason Derulo was never contracted to perform at Level One, that was never discussed or agreed, he was just going to turn up after the show and hang out. He is selling out arenas and there is no way we can even contemplate him performing anywhere except arenas now.

“We wish Level One all the very best in the future.”

On Thursday, Liberty X star Kevin Simm will instead top the bill after performing on The Voice and impressing all four judges.

Other artists, including Stooshe, Sweet Female Attitude and Platnum, will also perform.

Entry will be £5 and doors open at 10pm.
