A WOMAN has complained about an incident of fly tipping at the back of her home in Darwen.

Nicola Nigh, of Blackburn Road, says that rubbish had been lying in the alley for three months and despite several requests she says the council has done nothing to remove it.

The growing pile of rubbish is attracting rats and Mrs Nigh says she has spotted dead rats, used sanitary towels and an old bed among the debri.

She said: “I pay my council tax and what am I getting for it?

“I am absolutely livid and very upset with the council.

“I have tried on several occasions over the past three months to contact them but it was like speaking to a brick wall.

“They kept saying something would be done within three to five working days and nothing has been done.

“It’s heartbreaking to see that other streets are being cleaned up and nothing is being done about the alleyway.

“As the rubbish builds its encouraging more people to dump and I see rats every night now.”

She adds that bin men have not been emptying bins properly.

Blackburn with Darwen Council said it was aware of the problem and had visited the site.

But as the authority cannot get a vehicle into the back alley it says it will have to move the waste by hand which will take some time.

However a spokesman said that the rubbish should be removed by the end of the week.

Councillor Jim Smith, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for environment, said: “We are doing our best to deal with this as quickly as possible.

“People who are found dumping rubbish in the borough will be prosecuted and named and shamed in the press.

“I would like to thank the residents for reporting this and helping us to keep our communities clean and safe for all of our residents.

“If anyone witnesses fly tipping we would ask them to please contact the council directly.”
