Ellie Orange, nine, spent more than an hour in the operating theatre following the accident at Darwen Leisure Centre.

The Holy Trinity Primary School pupil was taking part in an activity day on Wednesday which included an Earth Ball challenge where the youngsters run up to a large ball and stand on the top, supported by two staff members.

Mum Heather Hill of The Meadow, Darwen, claims her daughter would not have suffered the injuries if the staff had properly supervised her.

However, an investigation by the Blackburn with Darwen Young People’s Service “found all the correct procedures were followed” and that the incident was an “unfortunate accident”.

Now Ellie’s mum, who was told of her daughter’s injuries by her ex-husband Mark Orange before she was taken to hospital, is calling for a further investigation into the incident and has branded the original as “unsatisfactory”.

Ellie, who is due to start back at school on September 7, has been left unable to feed and wash herself and struggles to write sparking fears that she will be forced to miss the start of the new term.

Ms Hill said: “I have to do everything for her now and she is in a lot of pain and is so frustrated.

“I just can’t believe what happened.”

She said that she was sure parents did not sign their children up for an activity day and expect them to suffer two broken wrists like Ellie.

“I want a further investigation into what happened and I hope that it leads to staff members getting more training,” she said.

“I have no issues about the other health and safety aspects of the day like the mats because they were all set out correctly as far as I know.

“The thing that I’m most worried about is how this all happened.

“Ellie is due to go back to the fracture clinic next week for an X-ray and I hope that it will show that everything is healing the way it should.

“She will have the pots on for between four and six weeks and I’m worried that it will impact on her school work.”

Ellie’s dad, Mark, who was contacted by the members of staff at the centre following the incident, collected Ellie and took her into Darwen town centre.

He then called her mum who took her to Royal Blackburn Hospital where she was given pain relief and booked in for an operation.

A spokesman from Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “We have undertaken a full internal investigation which found all the correct procedures were followed.

“We have discussed this with the parents.

“We feel it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage other than to say we wish the child a speedy recovery.”
