COMMUTERS are facing a month of chaos after Network Rail announced it is shutting the Blackburn-Bolton line for more than a month.

The company is installing an additional track near Darwen Station which will improve service frequency and reliability between the towns.

The work will enable two trains per hour throughout the day by 2017 once the line between Clitheroe and Manchester is upgraded.

However, Network Rail needs to close the line to carry out the improvements and there will be no trains between Blackburn and Bolton from Friday, July 17, until Monday, August 24.

Travellers to and from Manchester are advised to use train services via Burnley Manchester Road while a bus replacement service will operate between Blackburn and Bolton.

The work is being funded by the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership and Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Meanwhile, due to a problem at a level crossing between Blackburn and Manchester Victoria services were running late yesterday.
