POLICE have yet to formally identify a man who died after catching fire on a canal towpath.

The man, believed to be in his late-50s, was spotted in flames as he lay on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal path off Bolton Road in Blackburn.

A police spokeswoman said: "We have an idea of who he is but formal identification is still taking place.

"That could happen today or tomorrow."

Lancashire police and fire bosses launched a joint investigation into the man's death death, which they say they are treating as ‘unexplained’.

However, officers are 'confident' nobody else was involved.

The victim, who suffered severe burns, is believed to have set fire to himself near to the Raj Indian Cuisine and Lounge, formerly The Moorings pub, at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

Two crews from Blackburn fire station were also called to the incident, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
