DARWEN MP Jake Berry has welcomed the announcement that the government has introduced greater requirements for the Northern and TransPennine rail franchises, transforming rail services for everyone in Darwen.

Minister for Transport Patrick McLoughlin last week published requirements for the new franchises in the Invitations to Tender.

This included the complete replacement of outdated Pacer trains and free wireless internet on all trains.

Mr Berry said: “On the back of this fantastic investment we have had in the train station, this is another bonus for people living in Darwen.

“It shows that this government is serious about connecting our town to the surrounding areas and another reason why Darwen is such an amazing place to live.”

The Department for Transport confirmed last week that the 30-year-old Pacer trains will be phased out when the nine-year long franchise begins in April 2016.

One hundred and twenty new train carriages will be required from the successful bidder and the remainder of the fleet, comprised of Sprinter trains, will be overhauled.

An investment of £30 million in stations across the network is also being sought and longer trains have been pledged for busy commuter routes.

The announcement comes after a £20 million investment to upgrade the Manchester to Clitheroe line was signed off last summer.
