A DARWEN councillor has slammed the council over new traffic lights at Hollins Grove in Darwen which he says are still causing massive traffic headaches.

The much-maligned lights controlling traffic on the A666 and coming out of Earnsdale Road and Hollins Grove Street were introduced as part of the Pennine Reach scheme earlier this year.

Motorists and local businesses have complained that they cause major delays to traffic in the main road and residents have said they have turned Greenway Street into a rat run as people look to avoid the main road.

Council leader Kate Hollern has attended two meetings in a bid to address the concerns and some changes have been made.

But Sudell councillor Paul Browne said they were still causing huge problems.

He said: “My wife and I walked down the main road one night and traffic was queued from Hollins Grove to the town centre at 5.20pm.

“We were walking and we were going faster than the traffic.

“The following morning I walked down for the papers and the traffic was back as far as Lidl.

“It is still not working and I am disgusted.

“They would be better off being switched off completely.”
