RESIDENTS in Blackburn with Darwen can get rid of bulky waste for free this Saturday.

Caged collection vehicles will be at four locations across the borough in a bumper collection event that will allow residents freely dispose of large item of bulky waste.

From 9am to 10am, two vehicles will be stationed at the junction of Calgary Avenue and Quebec Road and within Princess Gardens, both Blackburn.

And from 10.45am to 11.45am, they will be stationed at the junction of Holker Street and Starkie Street, Darwen, and at the junction of Brighton Terrace and New Bank Road, Blackburn.

Coun Jim Smith, executive member for environment, said: “Last year the scheme saw tonnes of waste disposed of across Blackburn with Darwen and also saw the incidences of fly tipping reduce.”

Due to safety reasons asbestos, plaster board and business waste will not be accepted but most other forms of bulky waste are welcome.

More locations will be announced after the Christmas period.
