TOWN councillors in Darwen will put together a precise finance agenda early next year in a bid to bring down its costs.

Deputy chairman Pete Hollings reported to his colleagues at a meeting of the council last week that expenditure for the year could exceed the council’s income.

He said: “I have set out our cost breakdown for 2014.

“We are on course for spending a little more this year than our income and I would like to set a finance agenda item to the next meeting to look at the budget for calendar year 2015.

“I would also like to look at which councillor will run with each event during that meeting and try to eliminate unnecessary costs.”

According to financial figures released at the meeting, on Monday, December 1, the council had incomings of £131,533.37 and costs of £131,505.37, however, there are with more bills still to come out.

The council’s bank balance was £51,321.37 and a further £35,000 is currently held in a savings account.

According to the figures, the council’s biggest expenses were £25,020 in grants, £30,330.10 for Darwen Live and £20,952 on parks.
