A LOWER Darwen church is hosting a week of events to mark the centenary of the First World War and is hosting an exhibition to honour more than 100 men who lost their lives from the district.

Members from St James in Stopes Brow have been preparing for the events for months and contacted many relatives of the fallen men from Lower Darwen, Guide and Belthorn who will be invited to the events.

The week of war remembrance events begins at the church with a screening of the film War Horse on Monday, November 10 at 7.30pm.

On Wednesday November 12 at 7pm there will be a concert with the community choir called Days Gone By, singing WWI songs and poetry readings.

Children from St James, Lower Darwen and Belthorn primary school will read some poems they have written.

The exhibition, containing pictures, historical documents and artefacts will be opened at this event.

On Friday, November 14 the church will be open for the exhibition from 9am-3pm and at 6pm there will be a 'War Tea' and a social get together.

The week will culminate with a Remembrance service on Saturday, November 15 at 7pm.

Relatives of the men listed on the various war memorials in the parish will be in attendance.
