PRINCE George sleeps on a mattress made in East Lancashire — and now the company which made it is hoping his baby brother or sister will do the same.

Tucked away in the Almond Street Works in Darwen, Babywise makes hundreds of changing mats and mattresses every day.

And as one of the principal suppliers of baby items nationwide, the firm — which has had shops across East Lancashire has an impressive list of celebrities using its products.

Now, bosses are hoping Will and Kate, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, will choose a mattress made by the factory after announcing yesterday they were expecting another child.

Babywise owner Kathleen Cunliffe said: “It is great for us that Prince George’s mattress was made here and now we want the next one to have one too.

“They say you should always get a new mattress for a new baby as that is the best way to prevent cot death. And this time we will make them a ‘little prince’ or ‘little princess’ changing mat as well!”

Yesterday’s announcement by the royals came six weeks after Prince George celebrated his first birthday. A statement from Kensington Palace yesterday said: “The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.”

Other big names to have used Babywise products include Robbie Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Simon Cowell and Lily Allen. And one of the last jobs done by owner Peter Cunliffe before his death earlier this year from leukaemia was to drop off a mattress at the home of England and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

Mrs Cunliffe said: “The company that sold them the mattress asked us to deliver it direct, so Peter and I drove over. Wayne and Colleen came to the door in their pyjamas. Pete even forgot to get the delivery note signed, he was so in awe!”

But it isn’t just celebrities who make up the firm’s more unusual clients.

Mrs Cunliffe said: “We have a client who spends £50 every year on a new mattress for his pet rabbit.

“And there is a man who sells mattresses for dolls on eBay and if we don’t put the breathing holes in he sends them back because the dolls can’t breathe!”
