A TAKEAWAY boss has told of the moment he saw a pedestrian flying through the air after being hit by a car.

Carol Mercer was walking along Duckworth Street in Darwen with a friend when a blue Audi mounted the pavement and hit her, police said.

The car ploughed into a metal bike rail before colliding with the 49-year-old at around 10pm on Friday.

Kaveh Ahangodaz, 29, manager of the Godfather Pizza House takeaway, spoke of his horror at witnessing the incident.

He said: “I was at work when I noticed a car go past the shop.

“As I got outside I saw the car mount the pavement and hit a woman who had been walking down Duckworth Street.

“She literally just flew through the air before landing about 10 metres away.

“I was just in shock.”

Police and paramedics were called to the scene.

Another witness said: “There was a loud bang.

“The woman was on the pavement close to the TSB bank.

“She had blood pouring from her head and she couldn't move.

“Her friend was a nurse and was telling people to stay back.

“There were two ambulances and the road was closed from the junction with Bolton Road.

“Her shoe was in the middle of the road.”

Paramedics took Mrs Mercer to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We received a call around 10pm about a car hitting a female pedestrian in Duckworth Street, Darwen.

“The woman suffered leg injuries that have been described as neither life-changing or life-threatening.

“Officers detained a 33-year-old man from Blackburn at the scene on suspicion of drink driving.

“I urge anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact police.”
