A 45 year old man assaulted two female police officers within a week of being made subject to a suspended prison sentence. Blackburn magistrates heard Darren Bailey objected when the officers arrested him because he thought he had simply acted as a peace-maker in a dispute between his sister and his mother. Bailey, of St James Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to two charges of police assault. He was ordered to pay each officer £50 compensation. The convictions will be reported to the Crown Court where the suspended sentence was imposed for offences of affray, assault and possession of an offensive weapon, an axe. Andy Robinson, prosecuting, was arrested and placed in the back of a police car and was calm until they told him he was being taken to Greenbank police station. "He pushed one officer in the back and as he got out of the car grabbed the other officer by the neck. Nick Dearing, defending, said prior to the offences which lead to the suspended sentence Bailey had problems in his life. "He lost his job after having a heart attack, his relationship broke down, he turned to drink and his life became a complete mess," said Mr Dearing. "While he was on remand prior to the Crown Court case he dried out and got things into perspective. He has not had a drink since his release and is going into recovery accommodation." He said Bailey was disgruntled at being arrested because he felt he had acted properly in protecting his mother.
