A WOMAN was attacked with a plank of wood with nails sticking out of it during a ‘horrific and unprovoked’ robbery this morning.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the 51-year-old was attacked in Belper Street, Blackburn, at around 7am.

The victim suffered serious injuries to her face and broken bones in her hands as she tried to defend herself. She is in hospital awaiting surgery.

During the attack the robber stole the keys to to the Gill News and Off Licence, Pelham Street , Blackburn, and used them to get inside, and steal cash. He also took the victim’s mobile phone.

He is described as stocky, 5ft 10ins, wearing a black coat, grey trousers and black footwear. He had his face covered during the attack.

No arrest has been made and police patrols are set to be stepped up in the area.

The weapon has been recovered.

Detective Inspector Paul Barlow, of Blackburn CID, said: “This was a horrific and unprovoked attack on a woman which has left her with some horrendous injuries. I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or who has any information to contact us.”

A police spokesman said: “Detectives are investigating the violent robbery of a woman in Blackburn.

“The 51-year-old victim was attacked in Belper Street at about 7am on Friday, January 5, by an offender armed with a length of wood with nails protruding from it. She suffered serious injuries to her face and broken bones in her hands as she tried to defend herself. She is currently in hospital awaiting surgery. The offender stole the victim’s keys and mobile phone and used the keys to get in to victim’s place of work, a newsagent on Pelham Street, where they stole cash and made off.”
