A TEENAGER spent seven months behind bars after having sex with two 15-year-olds.

Tyler Deterville, 19, was initially charged with raping the two teenagers in Accrington and Burnley — but he has now been released from custody after the rape charges were dropped.

He instead pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child, on the basis it was consensual.

Deterville, of Belgrave Street, Nelson, has now been given a two-year sentence, suspended for two years, and must take part in a programme to address his poor attitude towards women.

Judge Sara Dodd, sentencing, said: “You as a young man of 17 or 18 had a very poor attitude to young women. Your attitude is disturbing.

“It was selfish, it was arrogant and it was disrespectful. It seems to me that unless you address these issues you will continue to be a risk to young women.”

Preston Crown Court heard Deterville was 17 when he met the first girl, 15, in Burnley.

The pair had sex around 100 times over an 18-month period when the girl was aged 15 and 16, Preston Crown Court heard.

In December 2016, Deterville, then 18, had sex with another 15-year-old he knew through her older sister.

The pair had become friends and the youngster would arrange to meet Deterville at her sister’s house — where they had sex.

The teenager, who can not be named for legal reasons, told her sister she had slept with Deterville and the older woman told their grandma, who reported the matter to the police.

During interview, the youngster, claimed she had been raped by Deterville.

But that charge was later dropped and Deterville pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child, on the basis it was consensual.

During their investigations, officers questioned the other young woman, who confirmed she had a sexual relationship with the defendant.

She said on two occasions, shortly after her 16th birthday, she had not consented, but again the charges of rape were dropped and Deterville admitted sexual activity with a child.

Deterville pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a child and a charge of common assault against the first teenager after he was seen dragging her by her arm at the residential unit where she was staying.

Following his arrest Deterville was remanded in custody at a young offenders institute

Richard English, defending, said while in youth custody Deterville has gained a plumbing qualification and has had time to reflect.

He said many of Deterville’s problems stem from an overuse of cannabis and added: “Although the victims of these crimes are vulnerable, the defendant is also vulnerable, having had periods of homelessness.”

He said the sexual activity with the first teenager was what would be expected from a relationship — albeit an unlawful and improper relationship.

Judge Dodd handed Deterville a suspended sentence and ordered him to carry out 30 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

The defendant has been made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order and made the subject of notification requirements for 10 years.

He must not contact either of the victims in the case.
