Four men were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent following the incident in Venables Avenue, Colne yesterday.

Police said a local man in his 50s was found unconscious following reports of a number of men fighting at 11.20am.

The victim was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious head injuries. It is understood he received a number of blows.

Last night his condition was described by detectives as 'life-threatening'.

Officers said witnesses reported seeing a number of men fighting in the street.

A 64-year-old man, a 40-year-old man, a 41-year-old man and a 25-year-old man all from Colne were arrested at a nearby property.

They were due to be quizzed by detectives this morning.

Yesterday a 100 yard section of Venables Avenue was cordoned off by police, with officers guarding both sections.

There were three police cars and two force vans.

An ambulance and a first response car were also on hand.

Officers could also be seen conducting door to door enquiries.

Neighbours said they were shocked by the incident and that it happened during the day.

One Venables Avenue resident said: β€œIt is scary to think this sort of thing happened in the middle of the day.

"This is a quiet residential area that has a lot of elderly people living nearby.

"I suddenly saw all the police cars pull up and the paramedics were very quick as well.”

Another resident said: "There were a lot of police here. I was worried about what had happened.

"I heard the police cars and looked outside and saw everyone.”

Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident to call them on 101, quoting log number 530 of July 18, 2017
