A BANNED driver lead police on a high speed pursuit around country lanes and built up areas of Darwen.

Blackburn magistrates were shown police footage of the chase during, which Schani Michael Tierney ignored roundabouts and junctions, crossed double white lines on a blind bend and reached speeds of over 60mph.

Tierney, of Redlam, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He was committed on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said at one stage a police car managed to pull alongside Tierney's vehicle but he still refused to stop.

"This was an extended police chase at high speed, some of it through built up areas and showing little regard for other road users," said Miss Allan.

Janice Vallance, defending, said her client was banned as a result of a totting disqualification and he claimed he was not aware of the ban.

"He had a row with his girlfriend and stormed off in the car," said Miss Vallance. "When he saw the police car he simply panicked. There is no suggestion of drink or drugs or anything like that. When he eventually stopped he was detained by a police dog and has some nasty injuries to his upper arm."
