Tributes to Margaret Yates

Margaret Yates

MARGARET Yates has been described by former colleagues as an "inspirational person".

Mrs Yates was involved in a large number of charities and voluntary groups as well as being well known through her nursing and managerial career in the NHS.

Jean Clunas, who runs the Blackburn and District Stroke Club, had been friends with Mrs Yates for more than 20 years after first meeting after working together at Park Lee Hospital in Blackburn in the 1980s.

She said: "Margaret was my boss and a wonderful woman. She was so passionate in everything she did and a real inspiration.

"The reason I began working at the hospital was because of her.

"Her real area of interest was improving care of the elderly and she worked very hard in that area. "

Mrs Yates set up the Hyndburn Stroke Club in the late 1980s and helped Mrs Clunas set up a sister organisation in Blackburn.

Mrs Clunas said: "I said when she retired she would be missed and then when she moved away I said she would be missed. Now she has died and she will be very badly missed."

Another friend, Audrey Foy, was a member of the Queen's Park Hospital League of Friends with Mrs Yates.

Mrs Yates was chairman of the fundraising organisation from her retirement at the hospital in 1993 until 1998.

Mrs Foy, of Haslingden Road, Blackburn, said: "Margaret was a very dynamic person and always got things done. During her time as chairman she helped raise thousands and thousands of pounds for the hospital.

"I will always remember her dedication to her voluntary work but she will be best remembered as a wonderful nurse and manager."

YOUR TRIBUTES
If you would like to pay your tributes to Mrs Yates, please add your comments below.

Lynn Wissett, clinical care director at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are sorry to hear that such a prominent and well-respected former employee has died.

"Margaret worked at the hospital for over 30 years and was instrumental in developing the elderly care service in Blackburn to become a modern patient-centred service.

"When she retired in 1993 as director of nursing/service manager of medical services at the former Blackburn Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust, she did not stop working and supporting the trust.

"She became a volunteer with the ambulance service, transporting patients, as well as volunteering at the ante-natal clinic within the hospital and for local charities.

"Margaret touched many hearts and was a well-remembered member of staff who shall be missed by many people."

Ian Woolley, former chairman of the Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Trust, said that Mrs Yates was an "outstanding colleague".

He said: "She was always full of wonderful ideas. She was hard working and determined, but also lively and full of fun.

"You don't get many people like Margaret Yates and we are so lucky that we had her working in Blackburn."

Age Concern chief officer Pauline Walsh said: "Everyone at Age Concern Blackburn with Darwen is really sad to hear of the sudden death of Margaret.

"For many years she was a valued trustee of our charity and an advocate for local people."

Margaret was a lovely, warm caring nurse and as my Sister Tutor was the best mentor a young nurse in PTS could ever wish for. I am deeply sad about this awful tragedy and my thoughts go to her family

How saddend I was to read about this tragic accident. I trained at Blackburn as a pupil nurse and she gave me my first job at Park Lee Hospital. She was always well respected around the hospital and showed nothing but professionalism and enthusiasm in everything she did.
My thoughts go to her family and many friends at this sad time. May I express my deepest sympathy to you all.

When I read of margaret's death in such tragic circumstances this morning, I was deeply saddend. I have fond memories of Margaret as nurse tutor, Ward Sister and throughout her career at Blackburn Hospitals. Also following her retirment when she was 'manning' the tea bar for the ladies attending the Antenatal clinic, and meeting her on tuesday evenings in the Blackburn Northern club for a chat, after she and Albert had been playing bowls. My thoughts go out to her family at this sad time.

Margaret was a very special person. I first worked with her in 1985 and we were colleagues and then friends ever since. She gave so much to others whilst at work and in retirement. Her smile will be forever remembered. My thoughts go out to her husband Albert at this very sad time.

I met Margaret when she worked for the NHS ambulance service. At the time I was dying of cancer. She drove me to and from chrisies in Manchester. If it wasn’t through the kindness of people like Margaret, I wouldn’t be alive today. She was one of the kindest and nicest people I have ever met. This worlds loss, is heavens gain.

Margaret was an insperation to me. She was a rock when my son Graham was dying of cancer. She was the only NHS ambulance driver that ever rang before she came to pick my son and I up. A great loss.

I worked for Margaret Yates from 1982 until she retired 1993. She was well respected and well liked by her staff .She did a great deal to improve the image of caring for the elderly . She was always fair even though firm and expected her high standards to be maintained .Nursing lost a good leader when she retired.

I was very saddened at the tragic loss of Margaret Yates.

She was truly caring with the ability to communicate with the heart.

She was and will be an example for all. That I am sure.

I no longer live in Blackburn and it is only today that I have learned of the tragic death of Margaret Yates. We worked together at Blackburn Royal Infirmary in the 1970's.She was a Clinical Nurse teacher and I was a Sister on Casualty. It was through talking to Margaret that I first deveoped an interest in training as a Nurse Tutor. Margaret and I became firm friends and I have many fond memories of the times we shared both professionally and socially. My heart goes out to Albert at this very difficult and sad time and I offer my most sincere condolences to him and to the family.

Margaret started guiding me through my nursing career when I was a cadet nurse at the age of 16 in 1973. She was a constant influence until I left the NHS in 1982 when I was a senior sister on the elderly unit, Margaret was then my senior nursing officer. She improved the care of elderly in Blackburn dramatically. Her enthusiasm and dedication was infectious. I still work with the elderly and the way I care for people today is a reflection of how Margaret taught me. My thoughts are with Albert and his family. Rest assured Margaret will never be forgotten as many of the nurses she trained will continue to practice what she taught us.

I was Margaret Yates secretary from 1076 up to her retirement and she worked tirelessly for the elderly in East Lancashire. She helped change the face of nursing the elderly and woe betide anyone who called her patients 'Geriatrics.' It was a privilege and honour to work for her. God Bless Margaret
