| ACCIDENT: Friends said they are in shock over Brett Walmsley's death |
THE family of a soldier who died in a suspected hit-and-run crash have paid tribute to a man with "a big heart who was loved by everyone".
Lance Bombardier Brett Walmsley, 25, of Greenway Street, Darwen, died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a country road on Friday, in the northern town of Halkidiki.
Police have arrested the 22-year-old driver, believed to be a local supermarket worker, in connection with the incident.
Brett, a member of the 47th Royal Artillery regiment, who had been working with NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo, was due for promotion to bombardier when the tragedy occurred.
Tributes pouring in to our website for the former Darwen Moorland pupil include some from his brothers and sister, Stuart, 30, Vicky, 23, and Tony, 19, and his parents Stuart and Olwen.
He also leaves brothers and sisters Glenn, Sarah, Adam, Coral, David, and Troy.
A statement released by the family read: "Brett loved being in the army. He was so happy when he joined and loved the army way of life.
"His loves were his family, the army, Darwen, and Blackburn Rovers.
"We were very proud of him.

"He had a big heart and loved everyone. We don't know anyone who didn't like him. He had no enemies.
"He seemed to smile in his sleep. We are a very close-knit family and that meant the world to him.
"His death has left a big hole in our lives, but we have taken great comfort from the many kind messages and cards we have received from friends, family and our local community."
His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Carwardine, said: "Lance Bombardier Brett Walmsley was a young man with a very promising career ahead of him.
"He was a character who was a friend to all and a mentor to the less experienced members of the regiment. He had an absolute zest for life. He worked hard and would play even harder.
"He was one of the rising stars within his troop and battery and was destined for promotion to bombardier on his return from Kosovo."
Brett joined up in 1999, initially serving with the 12th Royal Artillery regiment based at Sennelager, Germany.
While with the regiment he served in Oman, Germany, Kuwait and Canada.
His uncle Kevin had served in the army for 22 years.

I served with bret in Germany and we spent many a night drinking and having fun. This is how i will remember him. His cheekiness will also be fondly remembered. He was a good Soldier and a credit to the Royal Artillery

First time that I met Brett he was five years old and he gave me a hug. I could have been just another person passing through his young life but he gave me that winning smile, which was his default expression, and I was instantly a Brett fan. Last time that I saw him he was Lance-Bombadier Walmsley but he still had that default expression and the big heart.
I could not ask for a better nephew. Rest in Peace a thoroughly good man,

My Heart goe's out to the family of brett and he was a dear friend that if it was not for him i would have not met my now girlfriend 2 years ago. He was always a good friend and an excellent soldier, he was an inspiration to his juniors and he will be dearly missed by us all.

I will always remember Brett as a fun lad who was always up for a laugh, we spent many good times together hanging round the cavendish street area of Darwen as youngsters. We grew up on different continents due to circumstances and every time I came back to England and saw you, there was a common theme each time - you were always smiling. id like to thenk all the people who left comments on here it means a lot to me knowing my brother was loved by many. to me he was a kind,loveable ,mischevious hero he ment so much to me this should never have happened he had such a beautiful smile and never stoped showing it he will always be remembered and loved by many as he watches from afar i know he is doing wat he loves his time has finished guardin us he now guards heaven no doubt he will be stood to attention now with tank beside him watchin us all. well what a royal send off yesterday!it was the send off that brett deserved, he was a popular lad and it showed.I am so sad to have lost brett, i have hundreds of memories to treasure,all good!! we had a good childhood and in later years brett lived life and did more that most do in eighty years!it's all so typical for people to say good things about others when they have gone, but in bretts case it's true, he really was a fantastic lad, he will be sorely missed. sleep well brittle!! love Auntie fan and neil. ****

Words can not describe what bretts funeral ment to all of us yersterday. My dad once said that the army is a family within its self and he was right. It was a strange day wed in the walmsley house people arrivin at all hours of day most of them squddies lol(BRETT WOULD BE PROUD) but too all them sqaddie i would like to thank u all ever so much. Made some good friends i think dont think we will be gettin rid of them so easily.Thanks also to eveyone who attended he had done us proud and i hope we did him proud rip now bro love u millions always will ****
Words can not describe what bretts funeral ment to all of us yersterday. My dad once said that the army is a family within its self and he was right. It was a strange day wed in the walmsley house people arrivin at all hours of day most of them squddies lol(BRETT WOULD BE PROUD) but too all them sqaddie i would like to thank u all ever so much.
