A five-week-old baby escaped serious injury when a pub A-board smashed into the side of the car being driven by her mother.

Heidi Bylinski, aged 34, was returning home from a shopping trip with baby Lucy, who was strapped in the passenger seat, when it happened.

Shocked teacher Heidi said the child could have been killed by the sign, sent flying by a gust of wind from the front of the Bay Horse, in Preston Road, Whittle-le-Woods.

And the tearful mum explained that the terrifying incident was all the more distressing, as in October 2006 she lost a baby boy, born 27 weeks prematurely.

Now she is locked in an insurance wrangle with the pub, which she has slammed for "not even saying sorry".

Heidi, of Anderton Crescent, Buckshaw Village, said: "I was just in shock, the baby was in the passenger seat. She could have been killed.

"I don't want to get back in my car now. I'm scared.

"I rang my partner Mike and my sister. They couldn't understand what I was saying, I was in so much shock and tears.

"Another inch and it would have come through the passenger side window onto the seat where the baby was.

"I'm having flashbacks every time when I get up to feed Lucy in the night, just thinking what happened.

"She's just very very precious.

"I couldn't bury another child."

The frightening ordeal happened as Heidi was returning from Asda at Clayton Green on Friday.

"The sign just came flying to the car," she said. "I carried on driving and pulled in at Truffles Restaurant. I was just expecting a little scratch, but when I saw the damage I was just in shock."

Heidi, who teaches at Highfield Primary School, Chorley, reckons the board could have caused up to £1,000 worth of damage to her Fiat Punto, after smashing into her wing and hitting her wing mirror.

She said it landed in the road and that cars were forced to swerve round it. She took photographs of scene on her mobile and Mike, a software engineer, took the board home. She said her insurance company Direct Line told her to keep the board as evidence, and she reported the incident to the police who said they could not get involved it as it was a civil matter.

But later that night, Heidi and Mike got a call from the police investigating the alleged theft of the board.

Heidi stormed: "The landlady was more interested in having her sign back. She's not once apologised. I'm just so angry.

"I couldn't understand why they couldn't even say sorry. They said it was just the wind and it was with their insurance. It is just frustrating they are not accepting responsibility."

The pub declined to comment other than to say the matter was being dealt with by their insurance company.

A county council spokesman said: "If the board was not on the pavement, it is not an issue for Lancashire County Council, it is a matter for the pub owners and insurance company to sort out."

Thats it get Gordon Brown on the phone, we need to ban all A-boards! And lets have the landlady of this pub hanged in public for this extreme case of negligence!

Come on! This is ridiculous! What? the landlady has a supernatural control of the wind does she? And sits outside her pub all day waiting for people in their cars to blow A-boards at them? This was an ACCIDENT.
Let me put it like this. You put your wheelie bin out in the street ready for collection. Its a windy day. Man walks past, wheelie bin blows into him and breaks his arm. Whose to blame? The council? The Man? You? The answer will go round in circles but the reality is no one is to blame. It is an accident.
The exact same applies to this case.
However, the responsibilty regarding damages to the car should and will fall on the sign owner. Any other claims for 'trauma', 'insomnia' etc should be thrown out as utter rubish.

Good day.

On a day that 'high winds' are forecast - surely a landlady with 1 iota of 'common sense' would either secure the advertising board using a sandbag or something similar so that it would not be blown away - or not have the advertising board out there in the strong wind in the first place!

Suppose this had happened to a pedestrian? or if god forbid the baby hadnt been in the passenger seat?

And no apology from the owner in the first place? thats quite appauling if you ask me.

I suspect it is easy for you (Jack, Manchester) to dismiss the feelings and upset of the family here - because it didnt happen to you or yours.

Fair enough Jack, accidents do happen, but many are also avoidable. If the A-board had been chained to a lamppost, as many are, the outcome would not have been the same. In this case it's not good enough to say 'it's an accident' - the baby could have been killed for the sake of a bit of common sense on behalf pf the pub landlord. Besides, if the A-board was on public land, it shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Accidents do happen are avoidable and can be catastrophic and life changing. If the incident has been witnessed then I think we will find out where the resposibility lies...

Jack, All I ask for is that I am not out of pocket for damages to Heidi's car. Is that too much to ask for? No one is talking about claims for 'trauma', 'insomnia' etc except you!

Perhaps you should read the article in future before commenting.

Accidents dont just happen they are caused, this one was caused when no one thought ahead to secure a flimsy A-board on a windy day.Jack, do you have nothing better to do in the afternoon than over react to news items in local papers?

I just wanted to say to "Jack" I think you are a prat, has nobody ever told you that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. I just hope for your sake that nothing like this ever happens to you or any of your family. You are obviously incapable of any feelings or understanding for anybody in distress. Grow up and just listen to yourself and try and understand what this young couple must be going through.

This is a really sad story. I am amazed at the lack of common sense of the landlady or landlord of this pub to put an unsecured A board out in gusting 70 mile an hour winds. Perhaps if they had been driving in their car and been hit by a similar object I am sure they would have something to say rather than no comment. And Jack I hope next time we have 70 mile an hour winds they blow you into an A board it may knock some sense into you.

Jack, have you not got an ounce of compassion for this family???You obviously do not have children of your own or you would understand how traumatic being in a situation like this is.I totally agree with steve from Leyland, you need so much common sense knocking into your head as does the landlady from the Bay Horse Pub.
After reading the article I am just so glad that this family still have their precious little girl to dote on especially after their past year. Lets hope justice is done and the appology is given to Heidi, Mike and Lucy soon.
Good luck to you all.
